Infield ice, right field snow drifts, trying to remain standing while swinging a bat at a brightly colored softball, and a cold slide into home plate are among the challenges players will face at the fourth annual Frozen Yooper Softball Challenge Saturday, February 14, and Sunday, February 15, in St. Ignace.

The games will begin Saturday morning. Depending on weather, the shout of "Play ball" could turn into "Where is the ball?" The pitcher's mound will take on the shape of a squished snowman. Even the simple act of finding a base could prove exciting for players and umpires.

"You might think you know how to play softball, but then comes the drifts and the snowbanks," said Lynne Piippo, Special Events Committee member. "That's part of the trick of the game."

The snow-covered parking lot of Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry on State Street in St. Ignace will be converted into the softball diamond.

Spectators can cheer on their favorite team free, although fans are advised to dress for weather conditions. Dressing in layers to keep warm is suggested.

Team registration ends Friday, February 13, at the Mackinac Grille Restaurant. Between nine and 12 players are required for a team to compete. Registration cost is $200 per team. The price includes a lunch for players at the field, free sportswear, and a Kewadin Shores casino package. For players, Budweiser will provide free taxi service from any St. Ignace restaurant or bar to hotels.

Playing a minimum of three games is guaranteed and there is no rule about how much arc is allowed on pitches in this tournament.

The event will have two divisions, a men's division and a men's and women's mixed division.

The first and second place teams will receive trophies.

The softball challenge is sponsored by the St. Ignace Special Events Committee and Budweiser.

Last year, nine teams competed in the men's division and three teams competed in the co-ed division. Maples Sawmill of Hessel won the men's tournament and Viau's/ Jobber's Market of Escanaba was the co-ed division champion.

The event kicks off two weekends of winter fun in St. Ignace. Next weekend, the Pond Hockey Championship and snow bowling are scheduled on Moran Bay Friday, February 20, and Saturday, February 21.
