Crowds Enjoy Wild West Snowsfest
      Hundreds of spectators and participants enjoyed sunny weather last weekend during the Wild, Wild West-themed Les Cheneaux Snowsfest in Cedarville. The festival began Friday, February 13, with cardboard sled races, a spaghetti dinner, and a pub shuffle.

Hockey, Bowling Action To Begin Friday on Bay
St. Ignace U.P. Pond Hockey Championship
      Sports action will begin on Moran Bay in St. Ignace at noon Friday, February 20, when 600 players from around the county and Canada face off in pond hockey matches during the three-day U.P. Pond Hockey Championship. Ice will fly off skate blades and pucks will slide across the bay during aggressive hockey play in the afternoon on the outdoor rinks.

Village Mulls Blight Issue
Mackinaw City
      Purchasing two blighted Mackinaw City properties, bulldozing them, and reselling the land or using a least one lot for a fire hall was debated by the Village Council for the second month at the February 5 meeting. This time, trustees invited their attorney, Tom Evashevski, to provide legal advice on the blight ordinance, which Council is in the process of updating.

      A succession of winter storms that began in November has drained the funds St. Ignace receives from the state for snow removal on the I- 75 business loop, which also is the city's main thoroughfare, State Street. Vintage Sleds To Be Displayed at Naubinway Sat.
      Vintage homemade snowmobiles will be featured this weekend at the Antique and Vintage Snowmobile Show in Naubinway, and organizers Charlie and Marilyn Vallier are among those looking forward to their first opportunity to see the creative inventions that will be registered for display Saturday morning at the Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum.

'Hooping for a Cure' Game Raises $10,000 for Oncology Department
      Pink was the new gold for the St. Ignace Saints and the new green for the Cedarville Trojans, as the two girls basketball teams dressed in newly fashioned uniforms for one game, raising $10,000 in donations at LaSalle High School in St. Ignace Monday, February 9.

School, Roads Funding To Be on May Ballot
      Millage proposals will dominate May ballots and will be determined by voters in eight local municipalities when they head to the polls Tuesday, May 5. Mackinac Island, Les Cheneaux, Engadine, and Pickford voters will face contested school board races. Mackinac Island residents will determine who will represent them on city council as three candidates vie for two seats.
