Several Local Racers Place at St. Ignace
      More than 100 snowmobile racers went head-to-head in 20 snow cross divisions Saturday, February 28, at the Kewadin Casinos St. Ignace Snow X races. The races were the sixth stop on the Michigan Snow X Racing Association's winter race series.

      An idea that the village should buy two blighted properties was turned down by the Mackinaw City Village Council Thursday, February 19. The proposal was rejected first by the finance committee, then the council.

Winterfest Is Saturday
DeTour Village
      Contests, cook-offs, and a bonfire will highlight DeTour Village's annual winter festival Saturday, March 7, featuring activities for all ages. Many of the activities will be centered around the DeTour Village Hall on Superior Street. Cooking contests, mini ice and snow sculpture contests, and sled decorating for children are planned.

      In the past three months, the campaign to raise funds to erase the Les Cheneaux Community Schools' projected $99,000 budget revenue deficit has raised more than $22,773. Campaign Chair Brianna Freel said it has been challenging at times, but she expects the remaining 80% of the total to be easier to raise.

City Ready for Stimulus Funds
      St. Ignace needs help for repairing roads, upgrading sewer and water systems, renovating a museum, helping to construct a scenic pathway, and building a fire hall, and the city would like $85.6 million in stimulus money for the projects. The approximately $800 billion in federal money will be distributed across the country through grants and loans.

New Fire Truck, Repairs to Roof, 3% Raises in Mackinaw City's New Budget
      A new fire truck, repairs to the roof of Fire Station II on Pond Street, and heating system work at the Village Hall garage are among the projects included in the 2009/2010 Mackinaw City budget. City employees will receive a 3% raise and Village Manager Jeff Lawson will receive a 2.5% pay increase.

      Ore Dogs of Negaunee took the top spot in the first U.P. Youth Pond Hockey tournament on Moran Bay in St. Ignace. Six teams took part in the tournament that began Saturday, February 28, and concluded with playoff games Sunday, March 1.

Hot Dog Stand Designed To Pull Visitors Into Village
      Families visiting Mackinaw City soon will have another choice when finding a place to grab a hot dog and an affordable meal, if the Lieghio family is allowed to build a new restaurant. They will need only to look for a building shaped like a hot dog in a bun, on the corner of Central Avenue and Nicolet Street.
