District Sees Shortfall Ahead for Next Year
St. Ignace Area Schools
      The proposed reduction in state aid, a new distribution formula, and increased operating costs likely will result in a $150,000 budget deficit at St. Ignace Area Schools for the 2009/2010 school year. Considered a conservatively optimistic forecast, Superintendent Mike Springsteen said the estimated deficit includes possible stimulus money from the federal government.

Litzner Is Citizen of the Year
Brevort Township Man Honored Posthumously
      Charles Litzner was named Brevort Township's Citizen of the Year posthumously at a township board meeting Tuesday, March 3, in recognition of his unfailing service to his community, the volunteer fire department, and township government. Mr. Litzner died at the age of 53 December 24, 2008.

      Television actor John Schneider and automotive television host Ken Gross will headline the St. Ignace Car Show this year. Despite recession estimates that many car shows across the country may see a 20% drop in entrants this year, organizer Ed Reavie is optimistic that early registrations will pick up for the St.

Saints, Trojans Advance to State Regionals
      The St. Ignace Saints and the Cedarville Trojans both advanced to the regionals in the Michigan High School Athletic Association tournaments with district championship wins Friday, March 6. The Saints defeated the host Manistique Emeralds 68-39 for the Class C crown, and the Trojans downed the Brimley Bays 71-41 for the Class D title at Pickford.

Mackinaw City Men Report From New Post Assignments
      Jacob Brey and Adam Laninga, both of Mackinaw City, have recently joined the Michigan State Police and are assigned to the Cadillac and L'anse posts, respectively. Both men were graduated from the 121st Trooper Recruit School at the state police training academy in Lansing December 19, and both began working at their new posts three days later.
