Jacob Brey Jacob Brey Jacob Brey and Adam Laninga, both of Mackinaw City, have recently joined the Michigan State Police and are assigned to the Cadillac and L'anse posts, respectively. Both men were graduated from the 121st Trooper Recruit School at the state police training academy in Lansing December 19, and both began working at their new posts three days later.

Mr. Brey, 27, is a 2000 graduate of Mackinaw City High School and the son of Les and Cathy Brey of Mackinaw City.

Mr. Brey, who moved to the Cadillac area with his wife, Jenny, served as a summer parking enforcement officer for the Mackinaw City Police Department and worked briefly as a state park ranger in Colorado, where he met his wife.

At the Cadillac post, Mr. Brey is part of an 18-person staff, with 12 road troopers who cover all of Wexford and Missaukee counties.

"I love the outdoors, and Cadillac is a good place to enjoy outdoor things because there are a lot of national forests here and it's very spacious," he said. "I like how Cadillac is spaced out and how they have many different kinds of people."

Adam Laninga Adam Laninga Two of Adam Laninga's uncles are state troopers, and his father, Ken, who has been a trooper for 31 years, is stationed at the St. Ignace post. Ken and Kristi Laninga live in the Cheboygan area.

Adam, 23, was graduated from Mackinaw City High School in 2004.

He is one of seven troopers at the L'anse post, which patrols 1,500 square miles.

"What I like the most about this job here is that there are no two days on the job that are alike," said Mr. Laninga. "There's a little more snow than I'm used to, and it's colder, but I like it here."

Mr. Laninga said L'anse is a wonderful area for snowshoeing and other outdoor sports that he enjoys.
