Cedarville School District Issues 8 Layoff Notices
      Four teachers and four members of the support staff at Cedarville will receive layoff notices in an effort to balance next year's school budget. The cuts were voted on Friday, March 20, by the school board, which is faced with a projected shortfall of $408,000 at Les Cheneaux Community Schools. Revenue for the 2009/10 school year is estimated to be $2,895,982.

      Street banners will hang from downtown lampposts announcing summer events, table signs will decorate local eating establishments providing event details, and hotels will promote events in the latest effort by the Downtown Development Authority to publicize summer activities in St. Ignace.

Families Enjoy 'Fun Day'
     At Family Fun Day in St. Ignace, Katie Lambert shows off the beginning of the candy necklace she is creating using licorice, cereal, and gummy candies. The activity was organized by the St. Ignace autism awareness support group. A first grade student at St. Ignace Elementary School, Miss Lambert also won one of four bicycles given away during the afternoon. Related story and photos, page 6.

Hot Dog Restaurant Is a Go - With Stipulations
Mackinaw City Village Council
      The site plan for a drivethrough restaurant to be shaped like a hot dog was approved by the Mackinaw City Village Council March 19, with several changes that involve parking. An attempt by Village President Ron Wallin to landscape village property between the restaurant and street was ignored by the council and the property will be used as part of the restaurant's driveway.

Extension Service Faces Position Cuts, Community Program Reductions
      If proposed 2010 budget cuts to Michigan State University's Extension programs are approved by state legislators this fall, all Mackinac County Extension jobs will be impacted and some programs could be reduced or eliminated.

Cedarville Wins Fourth Regional Crown
      The Cedarville Trojans captured their fourth consecutive Class D regional crown with victories over Big Bay de Noc, 64-58, in the championship game Wednesday, March 18, and Harbor Light Christian, 66-60, in the semifinal matchup Monday, March 16.

Mediator Training To Be Offered in St. Ignace
      Training will be offered in St. Ignace next month for volunteers who want to learn more about resolving disputes peacefully. The EUP Community Dispute Resolution Center will offer 40 hours of mediator training April 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 25 in St. Ignace. The training will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. April 16 and 23, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 17, 18, 24, and 25.
