Airport Will Get 2 New Fuel Tanks
      Two new in-ground fuel tanks will be installed at the Mackinac County Airport this year, completing 20 years of infrastructure improvements at the facility. County commissioners approved financing a portion of the work a year ago, although a stall in funding at the state level delayed progress.

Board OKs Garage Plan
Clark Twp. Zoning
      The Clark Township Zoning Board of Appeals approved a variance for a height extension on Steven and Kathy Fountain's garage Tuesday, March 24. The addition will add a second story and new roof, increasing the height of the building to 24.5 feet, which will exceed the allowable height limit of 18 feet under the current township zoning ordinance.

Sign of Spring: Ferry Travel Resumes to Mackinac Island
      Arnold Transit Company resumed ferry service between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island for the first time since January, making the first trip of the season with the Huron Tuesday, March 31. The Huron's last run was January 4.

Solvency Tax Is Out, School Funding Cut, Senator Allen Reports
      In 2000, about one-third of the cars assembled in America were made in Michigan. That number now has dropped to 21%. During those last nine years, Michigan has lost about 10% of its automobile assembly market share, said State Senator Jason Allen of Traverse City during a visit to St. Ignace Friday, March 27.

Students Enjoy Story Time With Senator
     "Study math, study science, and do a lot of reading," State Senator Jason Allen said to students in first grade classes at St. Ignace Elementary School. As part of reading month, Mr. Allen visited the classes Friday, March 27, to read the book "Gitchi Gumee" by Michigan author Anne Margaret Lewis. The book was then donated to the school library.

Planners Put Final Touches on Bylaws

      The Planning Commission at Mackinaw City made a final round of changes to its proposed bylaws Thursday, March 26, and plans to approve them at a future meeting, leaving room for any subsequent revisions. "We're way ahead of schedule on bylaws," said Rob Most, who chairs the commission. "We're not rushed to finish these.

Great Waters Campaign Targets Nearby States
      To compensate for a dismal economy in Southeast Michigan, a five-county regional tourism promotion will target its advertising this summer to the three neighboring states of Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin. The campaign is building on successful marketing seen at Sault Ste. Marie, where out-of-state visitors now surpass in-state tourists.
