EUP Regional Science Fair Results Reported

(Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District photograph) St. Ignace, Brimley, DeTour, JKL Bahweting, Gros Cap, Ojibwe Charter, and St. Mary's Elementary schools participated when the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District Mathematics and Science Center held its annual Regional Science Fair Wednesday, March 18, at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie.

Each school district was asked to send three finalists from each grade from their local Science Fair to the Regional Science Fair. Students were asked to describe their methods and results and discuss the overall project. Judges then evaluated the project based on pre-set judging criteria. The judging panel consisted of university staff and upper level science students in chemistry and biology programs, as well as Math and Science Center staff.

The following students placed in the top three for their grade level at the EUP Regional Science Fair:

In kindergarten, Carrigan Craven of JKL Bahweting was awarded first place, and Adam Craven of JKL Bahweting came in second place.

First grade students Avery Brown of JKL Bahweting took first place, Wyatt Galarowic of DeTour came in second, and Andrew Innerebner of Brimley took third place.

Second grade students Leo Dudeck of DeTour, Ashlin Schnell of Engadine, and Sophie Shepard of JKL Bahweting were awarded first, second, and third places respectively.

In third grade, Eric Sweeney of Gros Cap School came in first place, with Annie LaPine of Brimley in second, and Julia Stenglein of Brimley in third.

Fourth grade students James Dureh of St. Mary's took first place, Cameron Livingston of DeTour came in second, and Renee Pomeroy of Brimley took third place.

Fifth grade students Lyla Luoto of Engadine, Cora Palmer of JKL Bahweting, and Zach Cameron of Engadine were awarded first, second, and third places respectively.

In sixth grade, Brian Harju of St. Ignace came in first place, with Billy Szlag of St. Mary's in second, and Jacob Schopp of Brimley in third place.

Seventh grade students Jacob Sjogren of St. Ignace took first place, Tasha Cook of St. Mary's came in second, and Henry Shackleton of St. Mary's took third place.

Eighth grade students Tyler Postma of Brimley, Haillee Brown of Gros Cap School, and Greg Matheny of Brimley were awarded first, second, and third places respectively.

Kristin Lenoir of Gros Cap School received the Jeffrey Misner Eccentric Apparatus Award.

All first place winners were awarded with a $50 savings bond and a trophy. Second place finishers received a plaque and gift card, and third place winners received a medal.
