2009 MHSAA Final Four Notes

Missing from the photograph is Mr. Fenlon's one-year-old daughter, Mirra. • Coach David Duncan earned his 299th career win during the Cedarville Trojans' semifinal victory against Lawrence Tigers . Duncan, in his 19th season at Cedarville, is 299-150 for a winning percentage of 66.5%. The Trojans qualified for the final four during four consecutive years 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009, the first Upper Peninsula team to reach that milestone since the St. Ignace girls' basketball team did so from 1999 to 2002.

• Mike Fenlon, a 1994 graduate of LaSalle High School, is an assistant coach on the Zeeland East basketball team and was at the final four game with his team last week. The former Saints standout played two years at Alpena Community College and completed his education at Grand Valley State University. Coach Fenlon teaches chemistry and physics and has coached at Zeeland East for eight years, with six seasons with the junior varsity team. His team, the Chix, were undefeated coming into the final four in Class B. The team completed the tournament season with a 27-1 overall record after upending Bridgeport 75-56 in the semifinals before falling to the Flint Powers Catholic Chargers 62-54 in the championship game Saturday, March 28.

It was his 299th career win. • Class A finals results: The Pershing Doughboys breezed past Kalamazoo Central Giants 90-73.

• Class C finals results: The Gators of Melvindale Academy for Business and Technology downed the Schoolcraft Eagles 73-67.

• Randy Lindquist, a former Mackinaw City Comets girls basketball coach, is an assistant coach for Montague (24-3), which lost to Schoolcraft 63-50 in the Class C semifinals last week. Lindquist, along with Head Coach David Osborne and Assistant Coach Paul Schlaff, all played together at Montague, and this is the second season the trio has coached the Wildcats.

• Paul Ellinger, former superintendent at Cheboygan Area Schools, was presented the 32nd annual Forsythe Award from the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) during halftime of the Class B championship game Saturday, March 28. The award is named after former MHSAA Executive Director Charles E. Forsythe. John Duncan of cedarville received this award in 1993, as did Web Morrison of Pickford , in 1990.

• MHSAA and the City of Lansing hosted a Hoopfest at Jenison Fieldhouse during the high school final four at Michigan State University. The last time this reporter was in the old Spartans basketball fieldhouse was during the 1970 Class C state championship game between St. Ignace and Muskegon Christian.
