Paquin, Duncan, Coveyou Selected to Upper Peninsula Dream Teams
C.J. Paquin Cedarville Twenty-six athletes from the Eastern Upper Peninsula were selected to the 59th annual boys and 34th girls meetings of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association at the Don Bottoms University Center at Northern Michigan University in Marquette Tuesday, March 31.
Cedarville seniors C.J. Paquin and Jessica Duncan were named to the All-Class Dream Teams and selected as the Class D Players of the Year.
St. Ignace senior Amanda Coveyou received All-Class Dream Team honors, and sophomore Nicole Elmblad was named to the Class A-B-C first team, and seniors Ashley Sweeney of Cedarville and Lauren MacArthur of Engadine were named to the Class D first team.
Juniors Gerrit Mortensen and Arik Hesselink of Rudyard received Class A-B-C first team honors, and junior Mckinley Portice of Pickford was named to the Class D first team.
Earning second team honors in Class A-B-C were senior Jordyn Pierce of Sault Ste. Marie and senior Chastin McKelvie of Rudyard. In Class D were seniors Billie McLeod and Taylor Smith and junior Andrew Jaroche of Cedarville, junior Jessica Graham of Brimley, and senior Mickael Cantin of Pickford.
Jessica Duncan Cedarville Senior Tyler Mapes of St. Ignace received special mention (two or more votes), and honorable mention honors went to senior Michael Gamble of Mackinac Island, junior Tyler Anderson of DeTour, and senior Jereme Daniels of Brimley in Class D, juniors Emily Jeffreys of Rudyard, Callie Smith of Pickford, and Colleen Hoy of Newberry, and seniors Shannon Browning of Engadine and Preston Brown of Sault Ste. Marie.
Remaining members of the boys All-Class Dream Team were seniors Brett Beland of Menominee, Class A-B-C Player of the Year, Joe Simon of Marquette, Josh Mickelson of Manistique, and Tony LaPlant of Ewen-Trout Creek.
The girls squad included seniors Samantha Manderfield, Class A-BC Player of the Year, Kelsey Roberts of Kingsford, and Taylor Watters of Westwood.
The remaining members of the Class A-B-C girls first team were seniors Kayla La- Muth of Manistique and Hailey Gervais of Hancock, and juniors Amanda Maxon of Munising and Emily Droese of Kingsford. The Class D squad included senior Brooke Granquist of North Central, junior Janele Linna of Ontonagon, and sophomore Mara Ryynanen of Chassell.
Amanda Coveyou St. Ignace The rest of the Class A-B-C first team were seniors Tyler Geary of Marquette and Andy Lauscher of Gladstone, and junior Kyle Aho of Gwinn. The Class D first team consisted of seniors Levi LaTulip of Big Bay de Noc, Travis DePuydt of Mid Peninsula, Charles Marsicek of North Central, and Tyler McGaha of Baraga.
Boys Teams of the Year: Cedarville Trojans, 19-1 in Class D; Manistique, 15-5 in Class C; Menominee, 17-3 in Class A-B.
Boys Coaches of the Year: Brandon Besonen of Ewen-Trout Creek in Class D; Pete Pericolosi of Menominee in Class A-B-C.
Girls Teams of the Year: Ontonagon Gladiators, 17-2 in Class D; Houghton Gremlins, 19-1 in Class C; Kingsford Flivvers, 19- 1 in Class A-B-C.
Girls Coaches of the Year: Dick Franti of Ontonagon in Class D; Mike Cross of Kingsford in Class A-B-C.
Dorene Ingalls of St. Ignace received special mention as Class A-B-C Coach of the Year.
Nicole Elmblad St. Ignace The Gil Heard Courageous Athlete Award was awarded to Kelly Allen of Kingsford. The sophomore skier has one leg and is a standout skier for the Flivvers.
The James Tretheway Distinguished Service Award was presented to Tom Johnson of Iron Mountain. Mr. Johnson served as the community service director for 25 years, athletic director for the Mountaineers, and is chairman of the Izzo-Mariucci Golf Tournament that is held at Iron Mountain.
