WWII Vets Take Part in History Project
      Thirty-four Eastern Upper Peninsula World War II veterans became honorary Ferris State University alumni Saturday, April 18. The veterans were recognized for their dedicated service during the war and participation in a program to archive their stories.

City Works on Windmill Law Update
      Since September, the St. Ignace Planning Commission has been crafting a new wind energy facility ordinance to replace a seven year-old local law that regulates large wind turbines. The new ordinance also will govern the smaller turbines that can be attached to homes or installed in yards.

Cormorants, Fish Will Be Focus May 2
St. Ignace Workshop Set
      This year's report on local cormorant control efforts will be among several topics presented at the Straits Area Regional Fishery Workshop Saturday, May 2, at Little Bear East Conference Center in St. Ignace. The workshop starts at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m., with a lunch break at noon. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $20; lunch is included.

With Fuel Cheaper, Island Asks Ferries To Lower Prices
      Now that the three local ferry lines have removed a $3 fuel surcharge on tickets this year, Mackinac Island City Council is inquiring whether ticket prices can be lowered for this season and have asked for a decision from the companies by Wednesday, May 13, when a special Council meeting is scheduled for 3 p.m.

No Local Swine Flu Cases Reported in World Outbreak
      No local cases have been reported as American public health officials and those from around the world are investigating outbreaks of swine influenza, called swine flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the outbreak Sunday, April 26.

Lighthouse Topped With New Lantern
     A new lantern is lifted onto McGulpin Lighthouse west of Mackinaw City Thursday, April 23. A lantern has been missing from the tower for more than 100 years. First operational in 1869, the light again will serve as a beacon to Lake Michigan sailors following a lighting ceremony scheduled for Saturday, May 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The lighthouse is owned by Emmet County. The county's Historical Commission and Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers led the project to reestablish the lighthouse as a navigational aid. Launching Biggest Ferries for Season Comes Down to a Matter of Inches
      Boat-lift operator Rudy Hennekes has little room for maneuvering and no room for error. He operates the boat-lift owned by Arnold Transit Company and only has a few inches of play on each side of the ferry company's three catamarans when putting them into the water each spring.

Village Demographics Studied To Guide Planning
Mackinaw City Planning Commission
      The Mackinaw City Village Planning Commission reviewed and accepted a draft version of the village's overall demographics to be added to the village master plan, which is under revision. The draft chapter was accepted at the Thursday, April 23, commission meeting and will be updated as new data from secondary sources and the 2010 census becomes available.

Tax Appeal Strains Portage Twp. Budget; County Steps In
      Mackinac County will contribute about $9,000 to Portage Township to support an ongoing appeal of condominium assessments, which the township says is depleting its financial resources. Meeting Thursday, April 23, the Mackinac County Board of Commissioners voted to contribute $9,109.
