A new lantern is lifted onto McGulpin Lighthouse west of Mackinaw City Thursday, April 23. A lantern has been missing from the tower for more than 100 years. First operational in 1869, the light again will serve as a beacon to Lake Michigan sailors following a lighting ceremony scheduled for Saturday, May 30, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The lighthouse is owned by Emmet County. The county's Historical Commission and Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers led the project to reestablish the lighthouse as a navigational aid. Beginning May 30, the lighthouse will be open to the public Saturdays and Sundays through Labor Day.
