Lorain Newman
Lorain Jennie Newman, 89, of DeTour Village, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.
She was born May 23, 1919, in Pickford, the daughter of Frederick James and Jennie (nee Dunn) Smith.
She grew up in Pickford and was graduated from Pickford High School.
She married Elmer Leonard Newman June 9, 1942, in Everett, Washington. She worked with her husband for 20 years as the bookkeeper for their feed mill business, Pickford Elevator. They also lived on Point Aux Frenes in Raber Township and later in DeTour.
She was a loving mother and grandmother and was always active in her children's school activities. Mrs. Newman liked flowers and birds and friends enjoyed her good sense of humor.
Mrs. Newman is survived by a daughter and her family, Janet and Gary Rathka of DeTour Village; a son, Bruce Newman of DeTour Village, and two grandchildren, Courtney Rathka of Comstock Park, and Brent Rathka of Duluth, Minnesota.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died July 5, 1993; a son, Frankie Newman, in 1944; three brothers, Arthur Smith, Glen Smith, and Norman Smith; and four sisters, Alice Cousino, June Smith, Arlene Rodowicz, and Marion Garlick.
Services were Monday, April 27, at the Union Presbyterian Church in DeTour Village. Visitation was from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. with the funeral at 11:30 a.m., with the Reverend Judith Arnold conducting the service.
Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery in Cheboygan.
