Memorial Day Services Announced
Memorial Day, a holiday to commemorate those who died in military service to the United States, will be celebrated in local communities Saturday, May 23, Sunday, May 24, and Monday, May 25. The traditional holiday is the last Monday in May. Services will be in St. Ignace, Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City, Cedarville, Pickford, and Engadine. No services are planned in DeTour. Dates and times of services are listed here.
St. Ignace
Memorial Day services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, at the Mackinac County Courthouse. Command Sergeant Major Martin Mieras will be the guest speaker for the ceremony. In case of inclement weather, services will be inside the courthouse.
Following the service, doughnuts and coffee will be served at the St. Ignace VFW Hall, and members from the Disabled American Veterans will coordinate a 1 p.m. visit to veterans at the long-term care unit of Mackinac Straits Hospital
Mackinac Island
The Island's American Legion Post will hold observances at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 25, at the Veterans Memorial site, at which time Post 299 will also dedicate its flag.
Also Monday, interpreter soldiers from Fort Mackinac will march from the fort to the Fort Mackinac Post Cemetery, where they will perform a short ceremony and salute before returning to the fort. The march begins at 8:30 a.m. and the public is welcome to observe.
Mackinaw City
Services will be held by American Legion Post 159 at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, on the city marina lawn. A service at the cemetery will immediately follow.
The Mackinaw City post is also hosting a hot dog roast on its front law Saturday, May 23. The public is welcome.
Les Cheneaux
The Law-White Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7958 of Hessel and Ladies Auxiliary will be joined by the Pickford American Legion Post 323 as they lead traditional Memorial Day services at Cedar Cemetery on Four-Mile Block Road in Cedarville Monday, May 25, at noon. A remembrance wreath, flags, and memorial flowers will be placed at the Veterans Memorial in the center of the cemetery.
Pickford:
American Legion Post 323 will hold services at 10 a.m. Monday, May 25, at the community park in Pickford, including Pickford High School's band playing the "Star Spangled Banner" and a student playing "Taps." Law-White Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7958 of Hessel will assist American Legion Post 323.
A color detail from the post will take part in services at Pickford's First Presbyterian Church Sunday, May 24.
Engadine:
The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8372 and American Legion Post 290 will lead services Monday, May 25, at 1:30 p.m. at the Mill Pond Park in Engadine. The public is invited to attend.
