Motorcycles Roll Into Town Sunday for Show's 2nd Year
Denny Beach stands with his motorcycle project, "Homegrown Chrome," at his home just south of Mackinaw City. The bike uses white and red oak, some of which was collected within five miles of his house, as an accent instead of more expensive materials like chrome. Mr. Beach said he looks forward to attending Sunday's Yooper Motorcycle Show at the St. Ignace Marina. The second annual Yooper Motorcycle Show will roar into the St. Ignace city marina Sunday, May 24. Admission is free for spectators, and motorcycle entries can sign up that day, or in advance.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and an award ceremony will be at 3:30 p.m. All years, makes, and models are welcome to participate, although the bikes must be operable and ridden into the show to be eligible. Some entries already have been received and participants can sign up as late as Sunday morning for the $10 registration fee. There will be $300 in cash awards and at least one trophy is promised to every entry.
Spectator voting will be offered between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. for a minimum $1 donation to benefit St. Ignace Disabled American Veterans (DAV). The Straits Chapter of the DAV is working to raise $15,000 to buy a van for transporting veterans between St. Ignace and Iron Mountain for medical visits at the VA hospital.

The Visitors Bureau and St. Ignace businesses are sponsoring the event.
Rick Baldwin of Menominee, who won the "Best in Show" award at last year's show with his "Captain America" bike, said he is looking forward to returning to this year's show.
Denny Beach of Mackinaw City will be bringing his customized bike, "Homegrown Chrome," across the Mackinac Bridge for Sunday's show. He said the bike's modification, which features accents of red and white oak, was first inspired by his wife's request to build a wooden cup-holder for the motorcycle.
"It seems like people appreciate it because it's something different," Mr. Beach said of the unique project.
The Visitors Bureau believes having activities like this show in St. Ignace is important on Memorial Day weekend, Mrs. Piippo said, and that the availability of great motorcycle rides nearby, like traveling east on Mackinac Trail or west on US-2, make this the perfect place for the show.
"We start with something and just let it grow," she said.
The motorcycle show adds to established annual vehicle events in St. Ignace, she said, referring to the two June car shows and September's tractor and truck parades and shows organized by Nostalgia Productions.
Awards offered in Sunday's competition are first through third place in 26 motorcycle class divisions and judges' choice of best in show. Prizes for the best in show award are $100 for first place, $50 for second, and $25 for third.
Spectators' choice trophies will be given to the two entries that receive the most votes in the charitable fundraiser.
Judges' choice awards and $15 prizes will be given for best ladies' ride, best metric cruiser, best nostalgic custom, best H-D touring bike, and a trophy only will be awarded to the chief show judge's personal choice.
Special recognition awards ranging from $30 to $5 in prize money will be given for best paint, best chrome, best upholstery, and oldest motorcycle.
Unlike the 2008 show, this year's event will not include a swap meet.
A show registration form can be found at the St. Ignace Visitors Bureau Web site at www.stignace. com.
