Local Jobs To Be Lost in Hiawatha Prison Closure
Some Inmates Will Be Released
      Hiawatha Correctional Facility at Kincheloe is among three prisons and five prison camps to be shut down by the state, in a budget cutting move announced Friday, June 5. It's too soon to speculate how many of that prison's 208 employees will be left without jobs, said Mike Sibbald, administrative assistant at the facility.

Cedarville Trade School Forecasts Growth
      The Great Lakes Boat Building School in Cedarville graduated eight people in its second class of students Friday, June 5. About 75 people attended the graduation, including students' families, friends, and supporters of the trade school.

Researcher Tracking Sand Dunes Currents
US-2 Beach Area Subject of Dye Study
      A researcher is testing the waters for dangerous rip currents at the Sand Dunes beach area along US-2 west of St. Ignace. Steve Hernek, a hydraulic engineer and member of the Mackinac County Water Safety Review Team, has conducted several rip current experiments along Lake Michigan near the Sand Dunes, using dye packets. The packets, the same ones often used by the U.S.

School's Budget Falls Short
St. Ignace
      The St. Ignace Area Schools general fund will face $279,389 in cuts and a $285,363 deficit for the 2009-2010 school year, based on the budget approved by the school board at its meeting Monday, June 9. The cuts and shortfall come from an expected drop in enrollment and cuts in state aid, estimated to be down $588,326.

Ironworkers Memorial Work Starts
Mackinaw City Project Underway This Summer
      Construction of the Ironworkers Walk of Fame, a memorial honoring the union ironworkers who built the Mackinac Bridge, and all those across the United States and Canada, has officially begun in Mackinaw City. Marilyn McFarland, the former Mackinaw Area Visitors Bureau director, expects the first phase of construction to be finished next summer.

New Emergency Plan Proposed in Moran Twp.
      Lives may be saved if calls for emergency assistance west of the Brevort River go to nearby fire departments in both St. Ignace and Hendricks Township simultaneously, rather than to St. Ignace first, Hendricks Fire Chief Alfred Dyer told the Moran Township Board of Trustees Wednesday, June 3.

Pediatric Care Hours Expanded at Mackinac Straits Hospital
      Children can receive expanded pediatric care at Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace on Mondays through Fridays under a new program that began Monday, June 8. Previously, the pediatric care facility was open two or three days a week and patients often had to wait in the emergency room for treatment from doctors who weren't pediatricians.

EUP Parent Group Lobbies Legislators in Lansing
     The group from the EUP poses for a picture with State Representative Gary McDowell on the steps of the state capitol in Lansing. About 35 adults and 43 children traveled to the STAR rally from the area, joining a total of about 600 children and 900 adults from across the state, to lobby for early childhood education issues. Mackinaw City Farmers Market Moved Back to Park
      The farmers market in Mackinaw City is changing its location for the second time in six weeks. The market will now be in two back-to-back sessions at different locations on Sundays in the northern Lower Peninsula village. The first half of the market will be held in Conkling Park, as it was last year, from 8 a.m. to noon.

St. Ignace Fire Displaces Families
      No one was injured but residents were displaced when a fire ignited in "Nancy's Place" on North State Street in St. Ignace Tuesday, June 2, at 4:30 p.m. The fire is believed to have started in the building's attic, and it then spread into a second-floor apartment, Fire Chief John "Bucky" Robinson said. The first floor sustained smoke and water damage.
