St. Ignace Show Inspires Owner To Dust Off 1915 Ford This Weekend
      Bob Terry, 54, of Grayling, is entering a car into the 13th Annual Antiques on the Bay car show that is almost twice as old as he is. He will be entering a 1915 Ford-Ames Racer into the car show in St. Ignace this weekend. Cars will be displayed at the St. Ignace Marina and nearby downtown parking lots Saturday, June 20.

Bridge Deck Gone, Work Continues Over Cut River Gorge
      With the bridge deck and pavement removed, workers are now sandblasting corrosion from the steel beams and superstructure of the scenic Cut River Bridge, high above the Cut River gorge on US-2. The bridge, about 25 miles west of St. Ignace in Hendricks Township, is expected to reopen to traffic August 29.

'24-hour Rule' Eyed in Discount
Mackinac Bridge Commuter Program
      Commuters will have 24 hours to get across the Mackinac Bridge and back to receive discounted fare under two proposals to be voted on July 10 by the Mackinac Bridge Authority. Public comments will be heard the day before, Thursday, July 9, at 11:45 a.m. at Little Bear East Conference Center in St. Ignace.

County Audit Is Favorable
      Mackinac County commissioners approved a fuel tank contract for the county airport, considered an employment contract for the county 9-1-1 coordinator, and received a favorable audit report for the county Thursday, June 11.

      Allowing private contractors use of road commission property has become a liability, Mackinac Road Commission Manager Dirk Heckman announced at a commission meeting Tuesday, June 9.

St. Ignace Scraps Bike Lane Plan on State St.
      The City of St. Ignace will not act on a proposal to narrow North State Street to three lanes, from Marquette Street to the northern city limit, so the city can add a bicycle lane on both sides.

Some Classes Cut at St. Ignace School
      LaSalle High School students will have fewer electives to choose from next fall, with drafting, advanced woods, automotive, advanced computing, and accounting classes being eliminated altogether for the 2009-2010 school year. Some individual sections of construction and woods and metals classes have been cut, as well, although the classes will still be offered.

Job Cuts Will Number Roughly 100 at Prisons
      About 100 jobs at the four correctional facilities in Kincheloe are anticipated to be cut as a result of announced closure of the Hiawatha Correctional Facility, said Warden Jeffery Woods. The cuts will not be limited to the Hiawatha staff and will be based on seniority after transfers are made into the other three facilities in the complex.

      Hot rod historian and writer Ken Gross will be traveling to St. Ignace Wednesday, June 24, after receiving the International Automotive Media's lifetime achievement award from a group of automotive writers Tuesday at the Automotive Hall of Fame in Detroit.

Schneider Looks Forward To Meeting People at Car Show Next Weekend
      In 1992, John Schneider, better known as "Bo Duke" from the 1980s TV hit "The Dukes of Hazzard," rode his motorcycle across the Mackinac Bridge and along the shores of Lake Michigan on US-2, en-route to Seattle, Washington. "It was great," Mr. Schneider said. "It's rare you find an undisturbed part of blacktop history like that. It's just beautiful up there.
