"It was great," Mr. Schneider said. "It's rare you find an undisturbed part of blacktop history like that. It's just beautiful up there."

That was the last time he visited St. Ignace, but he said he is eager to return as one of the two guests of honor for the 2009 St. Ignace Car Show next weekend, Thursday, June 25, Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27.

"I'm fortunate enough and I've been around long enough that I don't really have to do anything anymore," Mr. Schneider said. "So know if I'm showing up, it's because I really want to. I'm excited."

During the car show, there will be autograph signing opportunities, a chance for fans to meet and talk with him, and an appearance by the car "General Lee" Saturday afternoon at the Kewadin Casino tent in front of the Walker Furniture building in St. Ignace.

"It will be really 'meet and greet' in the truest sense of the word, and not, 'Hi, how are you' and moving on," he said. "I was brought up to appreciation, and it's an opportunity for me to do that, as well."

A meet and greet is also scheduled at the casino at 6 p.m. Saturday for fans who aren't able to meet Mr. Schneider downtown during the show. Kewadin Casino has sponsored Mr. Schneider's appearance as well as other aspects of the show.

What does he hope to get out of talking to the car lovers gathered in St. Ignace next weekend? Mr. Schneider said he has one specific piece of advice he's looking for.

"How do you keep drum breaks from squeaking?" he asked. "That's what I want to know."

A replica of the Dodge Charger "General Lee," arguably one of the best-loved stars of "Dukes," will arrive with Mr. Scheider for this year's show, complete with a horn that plays "Dixie." Rumors abound that other versions of the famous car may arrive with other collectors to pay homage to the series.

In addition to his role in "Dukes," Mr. Schneider was also a regular for the TV show "Smallville," in which he played Superman's adopted father, Jonathan Kent.

He also made a career as a country music singer in the 1980s and has taken more than 50 different roles in television and film productions.

Mr. Schneider recently starred in the Hallmark Channel Original Movie, "Come Dance at My Wedding," which was first aired Saturday, June 6.

What's next for John Schneider? He said he is doing less acting and more creation and production of TV shows and movies, including a drama and a reality show based on cars and stunts similar to what his character did in "Dukes."

"I'm going to do more of the creative end for a while," he said.
