Les Cheneaux

By Helen Shoberg 484-2626 • helenshoberg@centurytel.net

The Fourth of July is once more upon us, and there are many things to do this coming week. Friday, July 3, there will be the bake sale for Friends of the Animals at Cedarville Foods, and the Lions Club whitefish dinner at Cedarville High School.

Saturday, July 4, starts off with the much anticipated annual small town parade and greeting friends from all over, games for the children, and other activities, ending with a fireworks display over Cedarville Bay.

Of course, on these days the library is open and the museums are open, all waiting to greet visitors.

The Arts Council is planning for the month of July beginning Tuesday, July 7, with a "very beginning" drawing class by Peggy Patrick; Thursday, July 9, a locker hooking class will be given by Roxanne Eberts; Friday, July 10, "Using a Color Wheel"; Wednesday, July 15, a birch-bark basket with handles class by Ron Paquin; Tuesday, July 21, a French bread basket class by Ron Paquin; Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24, a rug-hooking class by DeEtta Gilland; Monday, July 27, gold leaf and egg tempura by Gerry Adams; Tuesday, July 28, "Put Creativity in Your Life" by Linda Henderson, and finally, a porcupine quill necklace class by Ron Paquin. All of these classes will be at the Arts Council's location on Hodeck Street, the former Paul's Bait Shop. It has been painted and upgraded into an attractive place for artists to meet.

A group of musicians from around the Pickford and Les Cheneaux areas performed for the Red Hats at Cedar Cove June 22. The group plays upstairs at the Pickford Township Hall every Saturday. Typically, 10 to 19 musicians are playing. Pictured are (front, from left) Clifford Harrison, Nancy Reno, Rollie Mayer, Karen Lameroux, Floyd Lameroux, Shirley Patrick; (back) Lonnie Newton, Nancy Lockhart, Jim Lockhart, Patty Stevenson, John Price, Rich Frank, and Tanny Armstrong. This group is often seen playing at the Main Street Café in Pickford, and many of its members are from there. The occasion was the monthly meeting of the Cove's Red Hat Society group, led by Jeanne Hays. Jeanne has organized Red Hats at Cedar Cove and arranged for entertainment each month for members and residents. Refreshments, strawberry sundaes, and other treats were served.

Don Birkmeier, representing the Les Cheneaux Lions Club, recently presented activities director Kim Gay with a new Wii game system and a Kodak camera. Volunteers, along with the local Boy Scouts, have completed the vegetable garden. A lot of good work has been going on at that facility.

The Les Cheneaux Snowmobile Club will have a fundraiser scavenger hunt/race Sunday, July 12, from noon to 2 p.m. at the Albany Bar. Entry fee is $10 per team. All are welcome.
