Bridge Commuters Granted 36-hour Window
Discount Crossing Program Changed at Mackinac Bridge
      Beginning January 1, 2010, motorists crossing the Mackinac Bridge who are enrolled in the commuter card program will be required to make a return trip within 36 hours to receive a discount off the regular fare.

      Rod Goehmann is retiring as superintendent of Les Cheneaux Community Schools in Cedarville and DeTour Area Schools in DeTour at the end of August. He announced his pending retirements at board of education meetings Tuesday, July 7, in Cedarville, and Monday, July 13, in DeTour.

Marina Dedication Is Saturday
Mackinaw City
      Straits State Harbor will be open for public tours Saturday, July 18, at 4 p.m. An official dedication will take place two hours later. The marina, at 409 South Huron Street in Mackinaw City, has 130 slips and 174 feet of broadside dockage. It will be managed by eight people and open to the public seven days a week.

St. Ignace Hospital To Work in Mackinaw City
      The Mackinaw City Village Planning Commission approved a site plan and special use permit to Citizens National Bank to convert half of its building on Nicolet Street into a medical clinic. The commission approved plans for the clinic, to be operated by Mackinac Straits Health System of St. Ignace, at a special meeting Thursday, July 9.

Art, Music Festival Is Sunday
Hessel Marina
      Artists, crafters, and musicians will share their talents with Les Cheneaux residents and visitors Sunday, July 19, at the sixth annual Music and Art Dockside festival in Hessel. The free art fair is sponsored by the Les Cheneaux Area Artisan Cooperative and will be at the Hessel Marina from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

LaSalle High School Moves Away From Block Scheduling
      LaSalle High School students in St. Ignace will be switching from block scheduling back to traditional, daily classes for the 2009-2010 school year. The decision was made by the school administration because scheduling was becoming increasingly difficult as more teachers are shared between the high school and middle school.

1800s Bakery Building Demolished in St. Ignace
      The old Just Rite Bakery building on the corner of State Street and Central Hill in downtown St. Ignace was torn down Monday, July 13, owing to weak structural integrity. Wade Huskey of Art Huskey and Sons Excavating, the company overseeing the demolition, said the building was dilapidated and unfit for use.

Repairs Announced for Clark Township Roads
      By the end of September, roads in Clark Township will see more than one-half million dollars in repairs with less than half of the funding contributed by the township. The Clark Township Road Committee, with the help of consultant Oliver House, is working to outline a multi-year plan to prioritize which roads need repairs both now and in the future.

Chicago Yacht Club Race Soon To Set Sail
      New sailing challenges, yacht club competitions, and a race addition highlight the 101st sailing of the Chicago Yacht Club's Race to Mackinac that begins Saturday, July 18. If weather forecasts stay true, wind direction and speed combined are expected to make an average paced event this year, racer Dick Coats of Mackinac Island said.
