A crew from Art Huskey and Sons Excavating demolishes the Just Rite Bakery on State Street in downtown St. Ignace Monday, July 13. The bakery, built in the late 1800s, has sat empty for the last several years.
The old Just Rite Bakery building on the corner of State Street and Central Hill in downtown St. Ignace was torn down Monday, July 13, owing to weak structural integrity.

Wade Huskey of Art Huskey and Sons Excavating, the company overseeing the demolition, said the building was dilapidated and unfit for use. He said the building was scheduled to be torn down a few days before the St. Ignace Car Show in June, but was delayed because they didn't want to take the chance of interfering with the show. Mr. Huskey's excavating crew started demolishing the building at 5 a.m. Monday to avoid interfering with morning traffic.

The property was recently purchased by Dr. Scott Clement, who owns and operates a dental office next door. He has no definite plans to expand his office or develop the vacant bakery site. In the meantime, he plans to use the adjacent lot for patient parking.

The building was built in the late 1800s and has sat vacant the past several years. City building inspector Paul Sved said tax records for the building say, "old," and do not have a specific year for its construction.
