Dustan Bowen Dustan Bowen Two women were killed when they and eight other family members and friends were struck by a vehicle as they walked along South Gould City Road at 10:06 p.m. Saturday, July 25. Dead are Julie Marie Hatch, 31, of Durham, North Carolina, and Sara Dobbrastine, 24, of Kent City, who died from injuries sustained in the collision. Several others were injured, including Jonel Hoogterp of Engadine, who was rushed to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital by ambulance and was later transferred to Marquette General Hospital, where Tuesday morning, July 28, she was reported to be in critical condition. She is a 2001 graduate of Engadine High School.

Dustan Bowen, 28, of Sanford, northwest of Midland, was arrested in the incident and was arraigned in 92nd District Court on a multiple count warrant that included two counts of homicide and for failing to stop at the scene of a fatal accident.

According to Mackinac County Sheriff Scott Strait, members of the Hoogterp family, who were gathered for a family reunion in Gould City over the weekend, were walking south along South Gould City Road at about 10 p.m. when Mr. Bowen lost control of his SUV truck and struck 10 members of the group from behind, killing two. Two dogs being walked on leashes were also killed in the incident.`

The pedestrians were walking on the northbound side of the roadway, Sheriff Strait said.

Police arrested Mr. Bowen early Sunday morning in the woods, a few miles from the scene of the incident, after he had fled the scene. He was taken to Mackinac County Jail, arraigned on the charges Monday afternoon, and is being held on a $1 million bond pending his preliminary examination, scheduled for August 10. He is being charged by Mackinac County Prosecuting Attorney Fred Feleppa with two counts of second degree murder, two counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident when at fault, resulting in death, two counts of failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment, two counts of killing animals, and one count of driving outside license restrictions.

Mr. Bowen was under driver's license restrictions to drive only to and from specific locations.

If found guilty, Mr. Feleppa said, Mr. Bowen could face up to life in prison.

Names of others injured in the incident have not been released at this time.
