Brevort
Finally, we’re enjoying front porch-sitting weather. During this cool summer, we’ve missed the visiting the front porch affords us. Horst Daemmrich from next door sat awhile Sunday evening, August 16, and Jackie Rippett visited Monday morning, August 17.
I received an interesting letter from Pastor Bob Sutherland concerning Pastor Erick Rehner, the first pastor to serve Trinity at Brevort from 1910 to 1913. Pastor Rehner also served in Cheboygan and Zion Lutheran Church in St. Ignace during that time.
Tom and Joyce Gustafson’s daughter, April, and her husband, Steve Campbell, have returned to their home in Saratoga Springs, New York, after enjoying a week’s vacation. With them were their three daughters, Danielle and her husband, Curtis Arpey, Ashley and her friend, Ben, and daughter Sarah. They enjoyed swimming in Lake Michigan.
Mark and Brenda Spencer received word that a friend of theirs was killed in a motorcycle-deer accident in the Harrison area.
Ernie and Paula Gustafson hosted a party for family and friends at their cabin on Gustafson’s Lane Thursday, August 13. Everyone enjoyed an old-fashioned fish boil and sang happy birthday in memory of John Watson, Jr., who would have been 49 years old that day.
Mark and Brenda Spencer’s son, Mark Scott, and his wife, Terra, of Redford have returned home from a trip to Germany to visit Joe Bellant, a former classmate of Mark’s from LaSalle High School. Joe is stationed in Germany with the U.S. Air Force.
John and Pega Kennedy attended the Cheboygan County Fair last week, where they were reacquainted with former neighbors and friends.
Visiting Mark and Brenda Spencer this past week were Brenda’s mother, Carolyn, her sister in-law, Judy, and Judy’s daughters, Kelly and Erin. Also making the trip was Mark and Brenda’s grandson, Rich. They are from eastern Ohio.
The regular meeting of the Moran Township board will be Wednesday, September 2, at 6 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brevort.
Denny and Jackie Rippett spent a long weekend at the Calumet Heritage Celebration and enjoyed a visit with their granddaughter, Kara Sokol, who is the main street committee chair. Carol Hardt and Marlene Bowe joined the Rippetts Friday, August 14. Denny, Jackie, Carol, and Marlene visited the cemetery to look for a grandmother’s gravesite, but didn’t find it. Denny and Jackie returned home to Brevort Sunday, August 16.
Mary Carney will return home this week from Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Keep well, Mary.
Our condolences to the family of Catherine Coburn, who passed away this past weekend.
While in the waiting room at Mackinac Straits Hospital, I had a chance to visit with Jessie Rogers and her new son, Wilder Jack Rogers. I remember when Jessie’s mother, Jackie, brought her to visit me when she was small enough to put in a shoebox.
Russ and Susie Nesberg are doing renovations at the Whitetail Motel.
Ellen and Bob Berry were visitors last week with a new family member, Isabel, or “Issy,” a lovely black lab adopted from the animal shelter in St. Ignace. Bob worked his last day at Mission Point Monday, August 17. Their granddaughter, three-year-old Maggie, has been spending time with Bob and Ellen this past week. She will be back for the blackberry season, as they are her favorites. Lieutenant Rob Berry and his wife, Melissa, of Oakland, California, have been transferred to the Coast Guard station in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Sally Conklin has family visiting at her home. Patrick and Lisa Jackman and their children, Luke and Lydia, and dog Dewey spent a great weekend with Aunt Sally.
On the beach were Don and Sherri Gustafson and children, Bradley, Luke, and Linnie, of St. Ignace.
Kathy Reid entertained family from Midland last week.
Bob Jarzynka’s flowers couldn’t be more beautiful this summer. He picked his first cherry tomato Monday, August 17, and expects to pick a cucumber soon.
Speaking of lovely flowers, the front sidewalk at Jack and Thora Shepard’s home is a riot of color.
