Joe Brown, Cheryl Schlehuber Capture St. Ignace Golf Titles

Cheryl Schlehuber won the women's crown of the St. Ignace Golf Club tournament. Cheryl Schlehuber won the women's crown of the St. Ignace Golf Club tournament. Joe Brown and Cheryl Schlehuber captured the men's and women's titles during the St. Ignace Golf Club championships Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16.

Brown won his second Walter Hansen Memorial club title after carding a 36-hole score of 145 (73-72) to finish three shots ahead of Tom Coveyou and Kevin Matson at 148. Brown also won the title in 2004.

Schlehuber won her third club crown with a 36-hole score of 172 (83-89) three strokes ahead of Fay Massey at 175, and Ruth Visnaw with 181 (97-87). She also won in 2002 and 2004.

Flight Results: Matt Mortensen with 152 (75-77) placed fourth and Sandy Krause with 184 (89-95) and took fourth.

Brian Olsen won the men's first flight with a score of 176 (81-76), while Charlie Brown took second at 158 (81-77), Ralph Colegrove third with 162 (80-82), and Andy Brown fourth with 163 (81-83).

Rob Winkelman won the second flight with a score of 161 (83-78), two strokes ahead of his son, Scott Winkelman, at 163 (83-80). Bill Matson was third with 165 (83-82), and Doug Ingalls fourth with 165 (83-82).

Ed Lester, Jr. won the third flight with a score of 160 (86-74), Mike Mortensen was second with 162 (85-77), Joe Krause came in third with 165 (87-78), and Derek Neelis finished fourth with 171 (84-87).

Chris Levi placed first in the fourth flight with a score of 173 (91-82). Patrick Sweeney was second with 178 (91-87), Rich Smith was third with 181 (95-86), and Chris Kittell was fourth with 188 (94-94).

Golf Notes

Ruth Visnaw recorded the first women's hole-in-one during qualification rounds and her first ace on number nine (her 18th hole) while playing with Cheryl Schlehuber Saturday, August 15.

Fay Massey carded her first nine-hole score in the 30's with a 38 after chipping in for a eagle three on number eight Sunday, August 16.

St. Ignace players also came in first on other local courses. Ruth Visnaw and Cindy Brown won the Les Cheneaux Two-Women Golf Scramble Thursday, August 13, and the foursome of Nicole Brown, Cheryl Schlehuber, Lora Brown, and Sandy Krause finished first in the Kincheloe Four-Women Scramble Tuesday, August 11.
