Mackinac Island School Superintendent Steps Down
Roger Schrock’s last day as Mackinac Island school superintendent will be Saturday, September 12, the school board decided at a special meeting Monday, August 31, following a 40-minute executive session. He will remain as an off-site consultant for six months under an agreement yet to be signed.
Ben Mosley, the school board president, was given authority to sign the agreement, which will expire March 13.
“If we needed something,” said Mr. Mosley, “he agreed to return.”
Dr. Schrock will receive six months salary and benefits, including health insurance, a package valued
at $64,000. Of that, his salary amounts to $47,120.50, insurance premiums will be $9,000, and a retirement annuity will add $7,900.
All board members in attendance agreed with the decision. Board member Larry Rickley was absent.
Dr. Schrock has been employed at the Island school for three years.
“We both came to a mutual agreement that we were not satisfied with each other any more,” said trustee Jason St. Onge in response to questions by a school district parent, Deb Styburski. “Reasons for dissatisfaction, I guess you could probably ask each one of us and probably each one of us would tell a different story, I don’t know, a different point of view, not story. Members might say, ‘no comment. The issue has been resolved.’ Certainly that is the position I’m going to take.”
Following the meeting, Dr. Schrock told the Mackinac Island Town Crier his departure was for personal reasons.
“I’m not unhappy with the board,” he said. “I just have some family things to take care of.”
About 11 people attended the meeting.
Mr. Mosley appointed himself as chairman of an ad hoc committee with Leanne Brodeur and Kelly Bean to give direction to the board on finding and hiring an interim superintendent and the possible length of time needed for the position.
The committee also will advise the Personnel Committee on seeking a new candidate. The committee, said Mr. Mosley, may call a special meeting before the board’s next regular meeting with information about an interim candidate. Hopefully, said Mr. Mosely, the ad hoc committee will have a recommendation for the Personnel Committee on an interim person who could fill the slot of superintendent before Monday, September 14. That is the first day classes will meet following Dr. Schrock’s departure.
Sitting on the Personnel Committee are Sara Chambers, Larry Rickley, and Terry Andress.
Under the Michigan Open Meetings Act, all committee meetings are open to the public and must be posted at least 18 hours in advance.
The school board’s next regular meeting is Thursday, September 17, at 6 p.m. in the school library.
