Max Butler Johnson, 84, of Belleville, a World War II veteran, passed away Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at his home.
He was born August 31, 1925, in Cedarville, a son of Edwin and Adda (nee Butler) Johnson.
Mr. Johnson married Helen Rohrbough September 10, 1955 in Detroit. They moved to Belleville from Highland in 1987.
Mr. Johnson served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps as a field cook on board a naval ship during World War II. He was a member of the Allen Park Masonic Lodge. He served on the Van Buren Township Public Safety Committee for 24 years.
Mr. Johnson loved his horses and his dogs. He was truly a family man, friends said, devoted to his son, grandchildren, and greatgrandchildren. He is survived by a son and his family, Mark and Tammy Johnson; two grandchildren, Edwin Johnson and Sunday Johnson; and three great-grandchildren, Tariq, Angelina, and Giovanni. He also leaves behind many friends, who were like his extended family, in the U.S. Marine Corps and the Public Safety Officers of Van Buren Township.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died June 22, 2003, and a brother, Dale Johnson.
Visitation was Friday, September 4, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Higgerson and Neal Funeral Home in Belleville. Services were Saturday, September 5, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
