St. Ignace used a balanced offense and defense that bent, but didn't break, to bounce back from a disappointing effort in the earlier season opener, posting a 28-6 nonconference road win over East Jordan at Boswell Stadium Thursday, September 3.

"We played much better as a team than against Charlevoix," said Saints Coach Marty Spencer. "We are getting healthy and that is a positive and makes us better."

The Saints totaled 329 yards of offense, 197 on the ground and 132 in the air, while the defense allowed 292 yards that included 230 rushing and 62 passing. They kept the Red Devils out of the end zone until the closing four minutes of the game.

Gerrit Mortensen was responsible for all of the Saints’ 28 points with two passing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns , one threepoint field goal, and one extra point kick. After a scoreless first quarter, the Saints marched 74 yards on nine plays, with Mortensen scoring from four yards out and kicking the extra point for a 7- 0 lead at the 7:49 mark of the second quarter. Two key plays that led to the score were a 23-yard pass completion from Mortensen to Caleb Litzner and a 22- yard quarterback run.
