Milton F. Smith, 90, of Livonia and formerly of St. Ignace, died Friday, September 11, 2009, at Westland Convalescent Center in Westland.
He was born in St. Ignace October 3, 1918, to Silas and Helena (nee St. Louis) Smith. The family home was on Mary Street.
When he was young, Mr. Smith caddied for Prentiss M. Brown at the St. Ignace Golf Club. He enlisted in the U.S. Army August 28, 1941, and served four years, three of them overseas, as a switchboard operator.
Following his service, Mr. Smith attended electricians’ school in Chicago and worked for Detroit Edison for 37 years, retiring in 1983.
He married Marilyn Miles May 30, 1953, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Detroit and the couple was married for 56 years.
The Smiths have lived in Livonia since 1960 and in Royal Oak before that. Mr. Smith loved reading and gardening and he hunted in the Upper Peninsula until 1995.
He suffered a stroke 14 years ago and was cared for at home for many years before entering extended care.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Bryan of Livonia and Michael of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and a sister, Arla McNamee of Novi.
He was preceded in death by his three brothers, Bernard Smith in 1982, Melvin Smith in 1984, and Ray Smith in 2004, and by two sisters, Harriet Lawson in 2006 and Florence Gabler in 1968.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, September 15, at 2 p.m. at Gros Cap Cemetery with Deacon Don Olmstead officiating.
