Big Mac Bike Tour Rolls Out September 19

By Michael Ayala

Cycling enthusiasts will bike along Lake Michigan in the Big Mac Shoreline Fall Scenic Bike Tour Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20. The tour begins at Mackinaw City High School and is divided into 25-, 50-, 75-, and 100-mile lengths. The Saturday ride will start between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m., depending upon the selected route.

Registration fees are $25 for the Saturday tour and $15 for Sunday. The first 400 riders who register are allowed to cross the Mackinac Bridge Sunday at 7 a.m. from Mackinaw City. They will be ferried back to the village with their equipment from the Arnold Mackinac Island ferry dock in St. Ignace. Cyclists must register for the Saturday tour to be eligible for the bridge crossing.

Rest areas including bathroom facilities and food and water stops are spread throughout each of the courses and are marked by signs. Safety wagons will patrol the routes to aid riders as necessary.

Each course is outlined with colored spray paint and signs. The 25-mile route takes roughly two hours to complete, while the 100-mile route takes about eight hours, said Kelly Vieau of the Mackinaw City Chamber of Commerce.

Registration may be completed at the Mackinaw City Chamber of Commerce before Saturday, or at the high school the day of the tour from 6:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Registrants must be 13 years or older and must wear helmets to participate.

A hot dog lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Mackinaw City Recreation Complex.
