Dan Wyers, a 1978 graduate of LaSalle High School (LHS), will be inducted into the LHS Sports Hall of Fame during ceremonies at Kewadin Shores Casino Saturday, October 17, at 6 p.m.
Wyers was a standout for the Saints track, football, and basketball teams and an assistant coach in the St. Ignace junior varsity and pee wee programs. He will join the Hall of Fame in its second year of inductions.
The LHS record holder in the discus from 1978 to 2008 with a throw of 145'9", Wyers also held the Upper Peninsula mark from 1978 to 1988 with the throw during the U.P. track finals. Playing for Coach Peter Everson, Wyers was a substitute on the 400-meter relay team that finished first at the finals.
Wyers, who was selected as the Curly Nelson Citizenship Award winner, played for Coach Mike Perry on the Saints’ basketball team that compiled a 10-12 overall record during the 1976-77 season and for Coach Dick Swenor in 1977-78 with a 14-7 mark.
Wyers was a member of the co-champions 1976 football team during his junior season for Coach Barry Pierson. In his senior year, the Saints posted a 5-4 mark with Coach Mike Perry and received Michigan Huron Shores All-Conference, All-Upper Peninsula, and All-State honors.
On the recommendation of Coach Perry, an alumnus of Northern Michigan University (NMU), Wyers attended NMU himself and played four years for the Wildcats, earning most valuable linemen award in 1982 and helping NMU to three playoff appearances before his graduation in 1983. Wyers returned to St. Ignace, where he served as the city recreation director and coached at the junior varsity level for five years and one season with the pee wee team.
He also was an assistant coach at Sault Ste. Marie under Barry Pierson and coached at Gross Pointe South.
Wyers has two daughters, Whitney, who lives in New Mexico, and Audrey, a sophomore at Alma College, and a son, Patrick, a junior at LaSalle High School.
