Mackinaw City Council Refers Property Abandonment to Planning Commission
      Albert Smith's request for the village's abandonment of 9,012 square feet of right-of-way of Straits Avenue and DuJauncey Street will be examined by the Mackinaw City Planning Commission, the Village Council decided during its 15-minute meeting Thursday, September 17.

Rowe Shares His Own Philosophy on Careers
      Mike Rowe and the crew from the cable program, "Dirty Jobs," returned to Mackinac Island last week for the second visit in two years. They were filming scenes for the final show of the season that will include Mackinac Island venues. Filming ended Thursday, September 17, and the Discovery Channel show is expected to air in early March.

‘Super Saturday’ Fair Will Feature Family Activities
      A day of food, fun, and prizes is planned for the Super Saturday Family Fair and 4-H Expo Saturday, September 26, at Little Bear East Arena in St. Ignace. Organizer George Ford said the annual event, which began in 2005, is a chance for local youth to enjoy the fun of a fair, since Mackinac County has no county fair.

Curtis Oktoberfest Offers Music, Food This Saturday
      German food, lederhosen, and polka await the thousands who are expected to attend the third annual Curtis Oktoberfest this Saturday, September 26, in Curtis. Organizers expect more than 2,000 people to attend the end-of-summer festival. It starts at noon in the park area at the corner of Lake and Main streets, and continues until 8 p.m.

Historians Head to Mackinac Island in October
      More than 200 state historians will attend the Historical Society of Michigan's 135th Annual Meeting and State History Conference on Mackinac Island Friday, October 2, through Sunday, October 4. The conference will feature three keynote speakers, breakout sessions, walking tours of historic sites on the Island, and a nature bicycle tour.

Free Workshop on Greening Business Is Available
      A free two-hour workshop for businesses interested in learning about more energy efficiency and green certification will be offered Sunday, October 4, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Brighton Pavilion at Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. The workshop will be presented by Dr. David Steenstra of the College of Business at Ferris State University.

Tassiers Ship Syrup to U.S. Embassy in Moscow
      When the order was placed last month via e-mail, Deb Tassier didn't believe it was real; she thought it was some kind of scam. Someone in Russia had found the Web site for the Cedarville maple syrup company she owns and operates with husband Dan Tassier, Tassier's Sugar Bush, and wanted to order 50 gift-boxes of maple syrup and maple-flavored candies to be shipped to Moscow.
