Bayside Fall Fest Is Saturday
Pumpkin Roll Will Be One Highlight
      As leaves around St. Ignace begin to change color, Bayside Fall Fest will celebrate the season and offer family-themed activities downtown Saturday, October 3. A major change this year will be the elimination of beer, wine, and live music that was offered at the event in previous years, Chamber of Commerce Director Janet Peterson said.

Facilities Combined at Kincheloe
      A room-sized pit that prisoners dug in the ground and furnished with chairs and shelves was not part of any escape attempt at a Kincheloe prison last week, but was motivated by prisoners seeking a place to get away from the eyes of guards and other inmates, said a spokesman at Kinross Correctional Facility.

Island To Protect Historic Buildings
Experts Say Historic District Needed at Mackinac Island
      Within a week, Mackinac Island will have an ordinance in place to protect its historic buildings from demolition, said Mayor Margaret Doud during a joint meeting of the City Council and Planning Commission. Her promise was followed by spontaneous applause from more than 30 residents and business owners attending a Tuesday, September 22, special meeting.

      For the first time since its formation, the Straits Area Narcotics Enforcement (SANE) unit will have a deputy from the Mackinac County Sheriff's office on its team, owing to a $231,022 grant received by the sheriff's office last week.

Les Cheneaux Dredging Contract Awarded
      The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded Malcolm Marine of St. Clair a $1.64 million contract to dredge the federal navigation channels in the Les Cheneaux waterways. The contract was awarded Thursday, September 24, and dredge crews from downstate could be seen in the Les Cheneaux area as early as this month.

CAA Shortfall Also Comes to County Board
      A woman who did not adopt a cat from the county animal shelter has asked the shelter for the release of animal adoption records, a request that was granted by the county commission but has raised objections by Mackinac Animal Aid Association.
