Freighters Take Shelter From Gale

Gales on three Great Lakes, Michigan, Huron, and Superior, drove four freighters into the sheltered waters between St. Ignace and Mackinac Island Monday, September 28. Winds on Lake Superior were clocked at more than 50 miles per hour and were at 45 miles per hour late Monday afternoon, said Dave Lawrence, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service of Gaylord. "The gales came a little early this year," he said. "Typically they arrive late October and early November." A low pressure system swirling around in the eastern portion of Lake Huron was to blame for the weather, said Mr. Lawrence. Storm warnings were posted for Lake Michigan, which was expected to experience the brunt of the storm. Freighters pictured are the Carson J. Callaway (left) and the Olive L. Moore. Not pictured, but also seeking shelter near St. Ignace, were the Alpena and the Canadian Enterprise.
