Charles Fox

Charles Robert Fox, M.D., a summer resident on Marquette Island in Hessel, was a World War II Navy veteran who went on to a lifetime career in medicine. Dr. Fox passed away September 22, 2009.

He was born March 16, 1922, in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania.

He grew up in Sandusky, Ohio, where he attended and was graduated from Sandusky High School. He served four years in the Navy during World War II as a pharmacist Mate First Class. After the war he attended Ohio State University and Ohio State Medical School. He did his internship and surgical residency at Akron City Hospital, followed by post-graduate work at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.

Dr. Fox practiced general surgery in Akron for more than 30 years and was a member of the American College of Surgeons. He was Deputy Coroner of Summit County for a number of years. After retiring from medical practice in 1987, he worked for a number of years at West Hill Hardware.

He was an avid fisherman and gardener. He loved a good joke and enjoyed sharing them with others. He cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren.

Dr. Fox is survived by his wife, Ethel; three children and their families, Lucius and Jayne Fox, Kimberly and Donald Millsaps, and Melissa and James Rainear; seven grandchildren, Ryan and Collin Fox, John, Sarah, and Peter Millsaps, Emma and Clarissa Rainear, and a sister, Helen.

Services were Monday, September 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Akron.
