John Chedrick
John Andrew Chedrick, 91, of Cedarville, was a World War II veteran who worked as a barber for more than 30 years. Mr. Chedrick died Thursday, September 17, 2009, at his home.
He was born June 7, 1918, in Salem, Pennsylvania, to John Andrew and Mary (nee Farkas) Chedrick.
Mr. Chedrick grew up in Pennsylvania and drove a car hauler truck for General Motors until 1942. During World War II, he served in the Unites States Army from 1942 to 1945 in the Asiatic- Pacific Theater as a driver and a medic. After the war, he attended barber school while working at Mayberry Sanitarium, where tuberculosis patients were treated.
He married Geraldine Fay Petrosky June 12, 1948, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
He worked as a barber in Northville. In 1992, he retired and moved to Cedarville.
Mr. Chedrick was a lifetime member of the American Legion in Northville, where he served as commander. He was also active in the VFW in both Northville and Hessel. In the Army he had played the military bugle call “Reveille” and has always been available to play “Taps” at any military service.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and dancing and he played semipro baseball. He especially enjoyed playing the trumpet and played in various bands and for many weddings.
Mr. Chedrick is survived by his wife of 61 years, Geraldine; two daughters and their families, Diane and Jim Parcella of Hessel and Christine and Kevin Sist of Howell; one son and his family, John and Mandy Chedrick, Jr.; three grandchildren and their families, Lynn and Jeff Wood, John Clifford “JC” Chedrick, and Clark Sist; and three great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Kaylie, and Laurel Wood.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Michael Barnick, George “Bud” Merichko, and Steven “Casey” Merichko, and one sister, Bessie Barnick Kulick.
Services will be private. Inurnment will be in Cedar Cemetery in Cedarville.
Reamer Galer Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
