Marlow Smale
Marlow Minor Smale, 51, of Cedarville, passed away at Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey Wednesday, September 23, 2009.
He was born November 23, 1957, to Marlow Sr. and Beverly Ann (nee Morrow) Smale.
For 35 years, Mr. Smale, known to many as “Mushaway” or “Mud Puppy,” worked in construction, primarily installing cedar boat docks or repairing old boathouse docks, first with family at Snows Dock and later for Breezeswept. Handy with a chainsaw and sledge hammer, always ready with a spike; if you borrowed one of his tools, friends said, you had better respect it and return it in as good condition as when you borrowed it. Like his Uncle Jack and Uncle Glen, friends said, he had a voice that on a foggy day, one could hear on a tugboat chugging across the bays, and you knew he was out there.
Mr. Smale was well known locally as a country and rock singer. He would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need, and he loved to rev his truck's pipes while leaving a patch of rubber.
He is survived by one sister and her family, Rebecca and Donald Solomonson of Cedarville; one brother and his family, John and Judy Smale of Cedarville; three nieces and nephews and their families, Danielle Solomonson, Donnie and Tina Solomonson, and Eric Solomonson; and two great-nieces, Deserray and Ciara Solomonson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and by one sister, Lisa Ann King.
Services were Monday, September 28, at 11 a.m. at Reamer Galer Funeral Home in Pickford. Visitation was at 10 a.m. Monday.
Inurnment was in Cedar Cemetery in Cedarville.
