Engadine To Host ‘Dig Pink’ Volleyball Match October 8

The Engadine Eagles varsity team, ranked number 11 in the state volleyball coaches association poll, and junior varsity volleyball team will host their second annual Dig Pink National Breast Cancer Awareness Rally Thursday, October 8, against the Newberry Indians.
October is the month set aside for high school and college volleyball teams to participate in Dig Pink and participating teams will set aside their traditional uniforms and wear special pink uniforms for this event.
Sponsored by the Naubinway Family Health Clinic, Mackinac Straits Hospital, and Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, the evening will full of special activities, raffles, information to help raise funds and awareness about breast cancer, and outstanding high school volleyball action between the Eagles and Indians.
Five area teams participated in the St. Ignace Invitational Saturday, September 26. Eagles Fall in Semifinals
During Articatz Tourney
The Engadine Eagles fell in the semifinals of the Articatz Volleyball Invitational Saturday, September 19 at Gwinn High School.
"This was a very competitive tournament and I was really pleased with the way the girls continued to improve throughout the day. Each girl on this team has an important role and they all work hard at every practice and the effort paid off," said Eagles Coach Kathy Miller.

The Eagles finished 8-2 in pool play after defeating Superior Central 25-21 and 26-24, Hancock 25-14 and 27-26, Chassell 25-16 and 25-21, and Gwinn 25-14 and 25-17, and falling to Calumet 19- 25 and 19-25.
In the quarterfinals, Engadine defeated Munising 23-25, 25-19, and 15-8 before falling to Houghton 25-23, 20-25, and 13-15 in the semifinals. Calumet downed Houghton for the championship.

"The girls played very hard and tonight the effort paid off," said Saints Coach Gracia Marshall. "They are playing well as a team and that is important."

for Saints Invitational Title
The Cheboygan Chiefs defeated Sault Ste. Marie for the championship of the St. Ignace Invitational Saturday, September 26.
Five area teams competed in the tourney. Engadine finished with a 6-2 record in pool play after defeating Inland Lakes 25-18 and 25-22, Pickford 25-21 and 25-23, and Newberry 25-17 and 25-21. Engadine fell to the Blue Devils 23-25 and 19-25. Engadine lost to Cheboygan in the semifinals 25- 23, 17-25, and 11-15.
Rudyard, 5-3 in pool play, defeated Cedarville 25-21 and 26- 24, and Manisique 25-15 and 25- 9; split with St. Ignace 25-21 and 13-25, and lost to Cheboygan 14- 25 and 15-25 before losing to Sault Ste. Marie 25-19 and 25-12 in the semifinals.
St. Ignace, 4-4 in pool play, defeated Manistique 25-14 and 25-16, split with Rudyard 21-25 and 25-13, and Cedarville 22-25 and 25-21, and lost to Cheboygan 12-25 and 17-25.
Pickford, 3-5 in pool play, defeated Newberry 25-17 and 25- 21, split with Inland Lakes 25-23 and 17-25, and lost to Engadine 21-25 and 23-25 and Sault Ste. Marie 19-25 and 24-26.
Cedarville, 2-6 in pool play, split with Manistique 25-15 and 23-25 and St. Ignace 25-22 and 21- 25 and lost to Cheboygan 11-25 and 11-25 and Rudyard 21-25 and 24-26.
Bays Battle in Strong
Durand Invite
The Brimley Bays made the long trip to Durand High School, where they played in the Railroaders Invitational Saturday, September 19.
Competing against larger schools, the Bays won one of three games against the Class B Charlotte Orioles of the Capital Area Activities Conference 21- 16, 19-21, and 10-15. The Bays lost to Class A Lapeer West Panthers of the Flint Metro League 15-21 and 5-21; suffered defeats to Class C Byron Bulldogs of the OK Conference 19-21 and 11-21, and lost to the host Railroaders of the Genessee Area Conference 12-21 and 10- 21.
"This was definitely a different arena than the girls are used to playing in, but this was a great experience," said Bays Coach Rhonda Amble. "I was pleased with our overall play. Although the scores may not show it, in five of nine games we stayed with our opponents."
Brimley has not backed down on stronger competition this season with invitationals at Durand, Northern Michigan University, and Ferris State University, plus tough Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference matches.
"We needed another invitational and I went online and found the tourney at Durand. This was a great experience that will make us better for state tournaments," said the coach.
