St. Ignace and Rudyard opened play in the newly formed Straits Football League (SFL) with the Saints defeating the Rogers City Hurons 46-22 on the road and the Bulldogs upending the Newberry Indians 39-13 in the annual homecoming game at Rudyard High School September 18.

Five Players Score

in Saints Win Over Hurons

Five players scored touchdowns for Coach Marty Spencer as the Saints, who trailed 14-6, took a 26-14-halftime lead and went on to post a 24-point SFL win.

Gerrit Mortensen completed two scoring passes to Austin St. Louis and one to Caleb Litzner and John Evashevski, while Mortensen and Litzner scored rushing touchdowns, and Cole Christiansen returned a pass interception for the Saints final touchdown.

"After the first eight minutes I felt we played much better," said Coach Spencer. "We made some defensive changes coming into the game at Rogers City and with each down, the players got comfortable. Big plays on offense was a big key."

Saints offensive statistics: Gerrit Mortensen, nine carries for 91 yards, 11 of 19 passing for 230 yards; Austin St. Louis, five receptions for 153 yards, two carries for 25 yards; Caleb Litzner, eight carries for 80 yards, two receptions for 25 yards; Dan St. Onge, one reception for 16 yards; John Evashevski, one reception for 14 yards; Joey Ostman, two carries for seven yards; Evan Everson, one carry for 13 yards; Cole Christiansen, one carry for nine yards.

Clark Scores Four

Touchdowns in Bulldogs Win

Junior Jared Clark scored four touchdowns to lift the Bulldogs over Newberry in the SFL.

Clark scored on an 80-yard punt return, 25 yard run, and two touchdown passes from Davin Salo for a 27-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Scott Coffey caught a 26-yard scoring pass from Salo and Zac Dempsey dashed 80 yards for the Bulldogs final touchdown.

Bulldogs offensive statistics: Davin Salo, nine of 17 passing for 183 yards; Zach Dempsey, four carries for 129 yards.

Bulldogs defensive statistics: Ron Coffey, 15 tackles.
