DeTour

Saturday, October 3, felt just enough like fall to make the 75 ladies attending the second annual EUP Fine Arts Council Fashion Show and Luncheon think about their fall and winter wardrobes, and what they will wear for those holiday parties. Six stores were represented in the show by 16 models wearing 48 outfits. The models ranged in age from just older than one year old to – much older. Congratulations to Dawn Hamelink and Olive Warner on a job well done. Proceeds from the event will continue the restoration of the Cultural Center.

Those attending and participating in the fashion show also got a first look at the results of one of the Cultural Center restoration projects. The new lighting is in and it’s beautiful. In the past, one of the complaints about craft shows and other events has been the poor lighting. That has certainly been corrected. The combination of overhead and indirect lighting will allow every event in the future to enjoy just the correct amount of light. Now it’s time to move on to windows and insulation, the next step in this large project to both restore and improve this grand old building that is so much a part of our area history.

Don’t forget the community birthday party Saturday, October 10, at Raber Hall. I understand it’s not too late to get tickets.

The DeTour Area School Board of Education will meet Monday, October 12, at the DeTour School. The board is in the midst of a search for a superintendent/principal.

One activity that will take place in the DeTour Elementary School this week is an ice-cream party hosted by the second and third graders, winners of the Happy Apple Scarecrow building contest at the elementary school level. The students came in first place and won an ice-cream party from the DeTour Museum, which they decided to share with students from the other grades.

Another annual event, the Friends of the Library scholastic book sale, starts Wednesday, October 7, and continues during the library regular hours until Thursday, October 15. Chairperson Debbie Fountain is working hard to make this event different and even more fun this year. The theme is “Reading Around The World” and she is planning decorations to carry out the theme as well as some new activities for students and the public. Even if you don’t have a student in the school, stop in during the book fair and check out the selection of adult books and gift items.

Plans are underway for two Halloween events that should be fun for adults and kids alike. Friday, October 30, there will be a haunted garden from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the DeTour Botanical Garden. Organizers are working to make the garden scary and fun as participants take a walk.

Saturday, October 31, DeTour will host its second annual Trunk or Treat. Everyone is invited to bring their candy and treats to the parking lot at the Union Presbyterian Church to treat our area children. If you would like to come in costume or bring decorations for your vehicle, you are welcome; it is not required. This is a great way for those who live outside the village to be a part of trick or treat. Hot dogs, cookies, coffee, hot chocolate and/or cider (depending on the weather) will be available at no charge. Cars should be in place by 4:50 p.m. and plan to stay until 7 p.m. Parents can bring children anytime between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
