St. Ignace
Sweatshirt weather began last week. Frost was reported Thursday morning, October 1.
I had a good visit with Cassandra (nee Smith) Darnell at Lehto’s Pasty Shop. Business has slowed down for the season. Cassie remembers playing guitar with her neighbor, Henry Smith. That was in the 1960s. Ted Gillmore had given my brother, Henry, three lessons. After that, Henry told his mother that he had mastered it and at $1.50 a lesson, she might as well save her money. Henry is still a musician today.
Last Thursday I met up with Clara Boahbedason. We reminisced about growing up together. As we left Gros Cap School and ventured to LaSalle High School in our junior year, we were old enough for drivers training. Teacher Gary Olsen was serious with students to make sure we passed the class. He always called us by our last names. Lots of good school memories.
Clara’s mother, Eva Grondin, was hospitalized recently but seems to be doing much better now. Ms. Grondin resides at Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care.
Joe Fullerton of St. Ignace was successful during the youth hunt Saturday, September 26. He got his first deer, a six point, while hunting on Bois Blanc Island. He is the son of Paul and Emily Fullerton. (Fullerton family photograph)

The newlyweds honeymooned in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Wishing Leland Pawley a fun birthday October 12. Mr. Pawley lives on his centennial farm in Gulliver and still enjoys working six days a week. He will be 91 years old.
Yvonne Weaver is happy to announce that her daughter, Tina Champion, will celebrate her 40th birthday October 27. Yvonne and her friends are having an open house for her at a local restaurant Saturday, October 24.
Norma Emery is keeping busy with her big yard and vegetable garden as she cans for winter. She also started knitting hats and sewing slippers for Hospice of the Straits, and has already mailed a box of such goodies to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
Denise Smith and her mother, Mary Edwards, of St. Ignace traveled to Grand Rapids for a couple days, where they visited with Mike and Rebecca Smith and their children, Michael and Mason.
Kathy Ney Cheeseman flew into Grand Rapids from Los Angeles, California, Tuesday, September 1. Ms. Cheeseman rented a car and drove to Big Rapids on business. She continued on to St. Ignace, joining her sister, Christine Ney Bogan, from Muncie, Idaho, to spend the weekend with their parents, Pete and Mary Ney of Evergreen Shores.
They left Evergreen Shores Sunday, September 6, and drove to Traverse City to visit Loreen (nee Winters) and Hubert Faber at their beautiful new home. They continued on to Grand Rapids, where Christine left the group to travel to Muncie to her teaching position at Ball State University. Kathy and her parents flew to Los Angeles, where they were met by Eileen Ney, who drove them to Kathy’s and Eileen’s condo in Century City, California. Mary Ney was taken to the emergency room Sunday, September 13, and diagnosed and treated for a benign Bakers cyst behind her right knee. Kathy drove her parents to their home in Palm Desert Monday, September 14, where their son, Kurt, of Palm Desert, had readied their home and car for their winter arrival.
Pete and Mary Ney look forward to receiving their issues of The St. Ignace News to keep up on local happenings, they said. All of the family enjoyed the trip from St. Ignace to Palm Desert.
