Charlotte Schmitt

Charlotte Schmitt Charlotte Schmitt Charlotte Bruckner Sweeney Schmitt, 94, a summer resident of Mackinac Island, died peacefully Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at King-Bruwaert House, in Burr Ridge, Illinois.

She was born April 24, 1915, to Edith Bruckner and William Bruckner of Hinsdale, Illinois.

Following her graduation from the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York, she married her childhood sweetheart, Richard Swee ney, August 1, 1936, and the two became residents of Glenview, Illinois, and Mackinac Island.

She married Emuel Schmitt December 22, 1979.

Mrs. Schmitt was a 48-year board member of the Anti- Cruelty Society of Chicago and belonged to the Glenview Library Asso ciation, The Service Club of Chicago, Hinsdale Humane So - ciety, Hinsdale Golf Club, Mack - inac Island Humane Society, Wawashkamo Golf Club, and Mackinac Island Yacht Club. She was an avid owner and breeder of world champion American Sad - dlebred horses and Hackney ponies.

Mrs. Schmitt is survived by two daughters and their families, Charlotte Sweeney Ernster and Diane and Daniel Sweeney Shea; five grandchildren and their families, Shannon and Dean Schuel - ler, Melissa and Jeffrey Gembis, Michael and Kerry Ernster, Chris topher Shea and Patrick Shea, and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Richard Sweeney and Emuel Schmitt; a brother, Herbert Bruckner, and a son-in-law, Mack Ernster.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mackinac Island Medical Center, Mackinac Island, Michigan 49757 or St. Thomas Hospice, Burr Ridge, Illinois 60527.

Interment will be held on Mackinac Island. A graveside service will take place Saturday, October 10, at 11 a.m. at the Mackinac Island Cemetery.
