Cain Is Hired as Les Cheneaux Library Manager

By Jonathan Eppley

Nadine Cain was recently hired by the Bayliss library system, based in Sault Ste. Marie, as the new parttime branch manager of the Les Cheneaux Community Library in Cedarville. Ms. Cain began her new position at the library Tuesday, September 29, replacing long-time branch manager Ronda McGreevy, who left the position for personal reasons at the beginning of September.

Ms. Cain had previously worked for the library as assistant and substitute branch manager a few years ago, but left that position in 2008 for personal reasons. She said she is glad to be back.

In her first several days back at the library she re-acclimated herself with the library's policies, procedures, and computer software. As branch manager, Ms. Cain fulfills the role of a librarian, and is in charge of the circulation and selection of books stocked by the library. She will also check in and check out books, audio-books, and movies to library patrons, as well as return borrowed materials to the shelves.

"It's a part-time job, but it's as full-time as it's going to be," she said. "There's lots of responsibilities that I didn't have before."

She said her long-term goals at the library are to increase the number of people using the library and its features, like wireless Internet and a weekly Thursday game night.

"We certainly want to increase membership and circulation," she said. "We'd very much like to increase our membership in the Friends of the Library," which helps fund the library.

Ms. Cain, who moved to the Les Cheneaux area in 1994, is a former principal and superintendent for Les Cheneaux Community Schools in Cedarville; she retired as superintendent in 2001. She earned a bachelor's degree from Alma College in English and social studies, and earned two master's degrees from Central Michigan University in school administration and reading.

She is also part owner of the Cedarville antique shop Wooden Door Antiques, Art, and Collectibles, which opened in 2008.

Ken Miller, director of the Bayliss library system, is excited to have Ms. Cain back on staff at the Les Cheneaux library. He said she was the most qualified of all those who applied for the position.

"She has lots and lots of experience in the school system and lots of education," he said. "We're delighted that she applied for the position."

The library, built in 2003, is located at 72 Hodeck Street in Cedarville, and is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
