Robert Emmett Hagan of DeTour Village died Friday, October 9, 2009, at home with his wife, Mary, at his side. He was 78.
He was born January 17, 1931, in Chicago to William Corley and Margaret Mary (nee Farry) Hagan.
Mr. Hagan served in both the United States Navy and Army as a parachutist, counter intelligence agent in Europe, linguist, commander of indigenous troops in Asian combat, advisor to Korean troops in combat, and in various classified field agent and staff positions. He was awarded five citations for combat valor.
After returning to civilian life, he obtained two masters degrees in education and guidance and led a career guidance project for the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District, then established media-based learning centers under contract with the Army. In retirement, he was instrumental in founding the Caribou Lake Association.
Mr. Hagan enjoyed traveling, hunting, golfing, family, and Sacred Heart ministries and the family is a longstanding member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DeTour. His wife of 58 years, Mary Kathern (nee MacDonald), is a descendant of one of the oldest families in DeTour.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons and their families, Michael and Sharon Hagan of DeTour and Kevin and Sheila Hagan of Apollo Beach, Florida; a daughter and her family, Deborah Hagan Mcquire of Colorado Springs, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Gschwind Aton, Kevin Gschwind, Cheney Hagan Durham, Shaun Hagan, Ashley Hagan, Katie Hagan, and Ryan Hagan; four great-grandchildren, Jackson and Patrick Aton and Brendan and Drew Gschwind; a sister, Sherrie Lewis, of Debuque, Iowa, and a brother, William Hagan, of Diamond Head, Mississippi.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Barbara Jean “Bonnie,” who was killed in an automobile accident in 1978 at the age of 22.
Visitation will be Wednesday, October 14, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, October 15, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart with visitation at the church starting at 10 a.m.
Mr. Hagan will be interred next to his daughter in Maple Grove Cemetery in DeTour Township with a military honor guard service.
