Bridge Crossings Free Sunday
      Motorists crossing the Mackinac Bridge Sunday, November 1, will get a free trip paid by the Mackinac Straits Health System Foundation. The free day is a first in the history of the Mackinac Bridge, which opened to traffic November 1, 1957.

Schools Report Flu Absences
Rudyard Closed, But Some Districts Not Hit
      Some school districts across the Eastern Upper Peninsula have experienced high numbers of absences in past weeks, sparking a decision by school administrators to close schools and let sick students recover at home. Rudyard Area Schools were closed this Tuesday and Wednesday, with plans at press time to reopen Thursday, October 29.

Gale Makes for Rough Crossing
17-foot Waves Batter Ferries, Toss Passengers
     Ferry boat passengers popped out of seats, became seasick, and were soaked from rain and wind that blew sideways in the worst gale of the year, so far, Friday, October 23. By the end of the day, everyone arrived safely at their destinations at Mackinac Island, St. Ignace, or Mackinaw City. All three boat lines said safety was their first concern.

      Voters in Mackinac County will decide on a proposed hospital millage renewal and St. Ignace residents will vote on a city charter amendment, three open City Council seats, and elect a mayor.

Medicare Billing Investigation Underway
      Mackinac County is on the hook for over-billing to Medicare through the Luce, Mackinac, Alger, and Schoolcraft (LMAS) Health Department, an amount that could add up to $400,000, pending the results of an ongoing, two-year investigation.

Sault Soldier Dies in Bombing
Army Specialist Brandon Steffey, 23
      U.S. Army Specialist Brandon Steffey, 23, of Sault Ste. Marie, was killed by a roadside bomb while serving in Afghanistan Sunday, October 25. His unit was traveling on assignment Sunday morning when a roadside bomb exploded. Spc. Steffey was on his second tour of duty in the Middle East. His first was in Iraq as a gunner in 2007.

Island Opens Door to Districts
Historic District Ordinance Would Allow Preservation Oversight
      The City of Mackinac Island now can establish local historic districts following the adoption of a historic district ordinance Wednesday evening, October 21, during a regular City Council meeting. The decision also paves the way for Hubbard's Annex property owners to move forward with plans to have their area designated a local historic district.

Rudyard Boys, Schlosser Win U.P. Titles
      The Eastern Upper Peninsula was well represented at the Upper Peninsula state cross country finals as the Rudyard boys won the Division 2 crown and Matt Schlosser of Cedarville captured the Division 3 individual title during the meet at Ludington Park in Escanaba Saturday, October 24.

No Decision Yet on Extra Les Cheneaux Dredging Proposal
      Members of the Les Cheneaux Islands Waterways Restoration Group met with representatives from Representative Gary McDowell's office, Waste Management, and the Michigan departments of Environmental Quality and Natural Resources in Lansing last week to propose additional dredging and work to Cedarville Bay when the federal navigational channels are dredged next summer.
