Area communities have planned Halloween activities for children Wednesday, October 28, through Saturday, October 31. A list of children’s activities follows.
City of St. Ignace
Halloween trick-or-treating in St. Ignace will be Saturday, October 31. It will begin at 5 p.m. and end at 8 p.m., with the fire siren indicating the beginning and end of the festivities.
In St. Ignace Area Schools, parents are invited to attend parties in kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms Friday, October 30. Depending on individual class schedules, some parties will take place in the morning and others in the afternoon. Also on Friday, elementary students will parade through the school in costume. To avoid congestion in the hallways, parents are to meet in the middle school gymnasium at 12:45 p.m., where they will see all students who choose to participate.
A Halloween skating party will take place at Little Bear East Ice Arena Saturday, October 31, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. It will include music, snacks, games, and prizes. The cost is $5 per person. Skaters are encouraged to dress in costume.
St. Ignace area churches are sponsoring Hallelujah Night, an alternative to traditional trick-ortreating, at the St. Ignace Middle School cafeteria Saturday, October 31, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Games, prizes, stories, and candy will be offered. All children are invited to attend. The churches are asking children to refrain from wearing scary or gory costumes.
Gros Cap School
At Gros Cap School, classroom parties will begin in the afternoon. The school’s younger students will parade in costume through the school Friday, October 30, at 2:15 p.m. Parents are welcome to wait in the gymnasium to watch the parade.
Moran
Brevort Township will host a Halloween party for the community Friday, October 30, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brevort Township Community Center. Trick-or-treating will be Saturday, October 31, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Les Cheneaux
Trick or treating at Cedarville and Hessel will take place Saturday, October 31, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. U.P. in Smoke Barbecue and Catering will offer a free elephant ear to children in costume at the Cedar Pantry parking lot Saturday, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
At Les Cheneaux Elementary School, classroom parties will take place throughout the day, and the costume parade will begin at 2:20 p.m. Friday, October 30. Parents, relatives, and friends can arrive around 2:10 p.m. for the activities.
Trick or Treat for Charity has yet to be scheduled. Signs will be posted when a date is set, according to Joanne Baker, student council advisor at the school.
Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island Recreation Department is providing a Halloween party for Island children from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, October 31, at the Mackinac Island school. Children are encouraged to wear their costumes and are asked to bring along a trick-or-treat bag.
Children will begin trick-ortreating that day after the party ends at 5 p.m.
Mackinaw City
Official trick-or-treat time in the village is 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, October 31.
Elementary students will have parties in individual school classrooms in the afternoon Friday, October 30. Students will dress in costumes and parade around the school at 1 p.m. Parents and relatives are invited to watch the parade.
Students in grades six through 12 can dress in costumes and take part in a class competition hosted by the student council. Prizes will be awarded.
Rudyard
The Kinross Fire Department is hosting a haunted house Wednesday, October 28, through Saturday, October 31, in building 127 on the corner of M-80 and Water Tower Drive. The hours are from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 6:30 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. Admission is $5 for children 10 years and older. Younger children can tour the Kiddie House free of charge. Proceeds will be used for fire prevention and education for the community.
Students at Turner-Howson Elementary School will participate in a Fall Fest Thursday, October 29, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Students will participate in both outdoor and indoor activities.
Pickford
Pickford Public Schools will host a costume parade and classroom parties Friday, October 30. Kindergarten through fourth grade students will parade through the school at 2 p.m. Friends, relatives, and parents are invited to watch the parade. Kindergarten students will carve pumpkins at 12:30 p.m.
DeTour
Raber Bay will host the eighth annual Halloween Costume Party for area children Friday, October 30, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Raber Township Hall. All area children are invited to join in the fun and games.
DeTour parents and grandparents will sponsor a Trunk and Treat for area youth Saturday, October 31, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Union Presbyterian Church parking lot. This event offers a safe way for children to trick or treat in a central location and provides an opportunity for adult residents living in the more remote areas to be a part of this traditional Halloween activity. Participants are asked to be in place by 4:55 p.m. and to remain until 7 p.m. for the safety of the children. Costumes and decorations are welcome, but not required. The committee has arranged for additional treats of hot dogs, cookies, coffee, and hot chocolate for the trick-ortreaters.
The DeTour Elementary Parents Group, with help from area residents and high school groups, is sponsoring a Haunted Garden at the DeTour Botanical Gardens Friday, October 30, from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. The event will include special stations along the paths of the garden. Most of the paths are more fun than scary and will be appropriate for younger children, but there will be one special path for the very brave, organizers say. It is not necessary to come in costume.
Engadine
During the free community meal Wednesday, October 28, at Engadine United Methodist Church, there will be a Trunk or Treat and a Spooky Halloween Path. Trunk or Treat will begin at 5:45 p.m., followed by the Spooky Path at 6:30 p.m. All area children are invited to attend.
Curtis
The Curtis Women's Club is sponsoring Trunk or Treat Saturday, October 31, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Portage Township Hall parking lot. Participants can park their vehicles with the truck or tailgate open, and pass out treats to children. Children's games will be available inside the Community Building, along with free coffee, cider, and doughnuts. Costumes will be judged from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
