Voters To Head To Polls Tuesday
Voters in Mackinac County will decide on a proposed hospital millage renewal and St. Ignace residents will vote on a city charter amendment, three open City Council seats, and elect a mayor.
The only county-wide election item is the proposed renewal of a five year, 1.2-mill tax levy to help fund the operations of Mackinac Straits Health System. The millage fulfills a 1989 agreement between the hospital and the county to provide health services to all residents of Mackinac County, regardless of ability to pay. The 1.2 mills will raise $1,088,700 in 2010, the first of the five years the tax will be collected.
St. Ignace residents will decide if the city's charter will be amended so as not to have to publish the entire city audit in a newspaper. If the amendment passes, the city would be required to post notice that the audit is available for public review at the city hall.
Three, four-year City Council terms are up this year in St. Ignace, with terms expiring for Don Gustafson, Susan Tamlyn- Massaway, and Tom Della- Moretta. Mr. Della-Moretta and Mr. Gustafson are running for reelection, and the four challengers are Steven Dufresne, Kenneth Perala, Jane Weiss, and James Clapperton.
Incumbent Paul Grondin and challenger Mary Nichols are vying for the two-year seat of mayor of St. Ignace.
Profiles of all canidates and reports of the ballot issues appeared in last week's edition of The St. Ignace News.
Polls will open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. In St. Ignace, residents will cast their votes at Little Bear East Arena. Voters in Brevort Township can cast their ballots at the Community Center in Moran, voters in Clark Township at the Community Center in Cedarville, those in Precinct 2 of Garfield Township at the Naubinway Pavilion, in Hendricks Township at the Epoufette Fire Hall, in Hudson Township at the Rexton Community Center, in Portage Township at the Curtis Community Building, on Mackinac Island at the first floor of the Community Hall. Voters in St. Ignace Township, Newton Township, Moran Township, Marquette Township, Precinct 1 of Garfield Township, and voters on Bois Blanc Island can all vote at their local township halls.
A government-issued picture identification, like a driver's license or passport, is required to confirm a voter's identity at the polls, and no other documentation is required. Only registered voters will be allowed to vote in Tuesday's election.
Election results will be available at The St. Ignace News office Wednesday morning, November 4, and on the newspaper's Web site free of charge at www.stignacenews. com. Results will also be reported in the November 12 issue.
