Saints Down Trojans, Indians in Volleyball

The St. Ignace Saints volleyball team went four matches to defeat the Cedarville Trojans during a non-conference home contest Thursday, October 22, and had to go five matches to upend the Newberry Indians in a Straits Area Conference (SAC) home match Tuesday, October 20.

"We played at our opponent’s level and I was pleased with our effort against Cedarville and Newberry, but we still need more work on our serving," said Saints Coach Gracia Marshall. "We continue to improve as the season goes on and that is important with district tournaments coming up during the first week of November."

Saints combined statistics: Kali Jo Marshall, 51 assists, 14 aces, 22 good serves, 14 good passes, four attacks, two kills; Dana Schieding, 50 good passes, six aces, 12 good serves, nine attacks, two kills; Carissa Cowell, 50 assists, one ace, two good serves, three attacks, two digs; Holly Smith, 22 assists, six aces, 17 good serves, four good passes, two kills; Mallory LaLonde, 24 good passes, three aces, 11 good serves, three assists; Christi Therrian, four aces, 20 good serves, 14 attacks, nine kills, four blocks, three good passes; Lauren Winkelman, seven aces, 12 good serves, 20 good passes, two digs; Anna St. Andrew, 18 good passes, two aces, 11 good serves, four attacks, dive digs, two assists; Martina Beaudoin, 14 good passes, four aces, eight good serves; Amber St. Andrew, 18 good passes, five good serves; Katy LaTour, 10 kills, six attacks, three blocks, two good passes; Amanda Dixon, four good passes.

This was the final regular season match for seniors Holly Smith, Dana Schieding, Amanda Dixon, Mallory LaLonde, Katy LaTour, Christi Therrian, Kali Jo Marshall, and Martina Beaudoin.

The Saints junior varsity team won both of its matches. No scores were available.

St. Ignace will compete in the SAC tournament at Cheboygan Saturday, October 31, and travel to Manistique for the opening round of the Class C districts against the Emeralds Tuesday, November 3, at 6 p.m. If the Saints defeat Manistique, St. Ignace will host the district championship match Thursday, November 5, in the middle school at 6 p.m.
