It was a busy weekend in DeTour Village. Halloween celebrations began Friday morning, October 30, and continued through Saturday evening, October 31. The weather wasn’t the greatest but at least there wasn’t snow.

Thirty-one DeTour Village and 11 Raber senior citizens, most in costume, met at the DeTour Village Hall for a Halloween luncheon and party Friday morning, October 30. The group had snacks and played games while enjoying the costumes. Prizes were won by Loraine Ness, Betty James, Darlene Jarmusch, Dianne Schmitigal, Josephine Seaman, and Olive Warner. Ellen Schopp won the coffee draw. The party concluded with a special appearance and costume parade by students from the DeTour Elementary School, who received treats from the senior group.

The students stayed at the hall to enjoy their own party during the afternoon. They divided their time between three activity stations, bingo, crafts, and story time. They also enjoyed treats before returning to the school to end the day with the breaking of a piñata. I was fortunate to attend the children’s party, and I’ve never seen teachers more organized or students better behaved than those at Friday’s party.

Everyone commented on this same wonderful behavior during the second annual Saturday night Trunk and Treat. The event was a great success. Best estimates are that around 80 youngsters enjoyed trick-or-treating at the vehicles, while hot dogs, cookies, hot chocolate, and coffee were consumed by children, parents, and treaters in the 20-plus vehicles parked around the parking lot of Union Presbyterian Church.

The DeTour Area School Board met Monday, November 2, for public interviews with superintendent candidates at last week’s special meeting. The regular board of education meeting will be Monday, November 9, at 6:45 p.m. at the Raber Township building. This will be the last meeting with interim superintendent, Pete Everson, from the ISD.

If you enjoy good music and good food, don’t miss the Veterans’ Day remembrance and celebration followed by a lasagna supper hosted by the Lower St. Marys River Chapter of Habitat for Humanity at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 8, at Union Presbyterian Church. The remembrance will feature the Northland Men’s Barbershop Chorus from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and the EUP Fine Arts Council Community Choir. There is no charge for the entertainment or supper. A free-will offering will be taken to raise funds to build the first habitat home in our area.

The annual DeTour Elementary School holiday greens sale will begin in the next week or so. Area students will be taking orders to raise funds for student activities. If you are not contacted, you may place an order by calling the school.

The November 15 opening of the deer rifle season is fast approaching. A new event this year will be a “Blessing of the Hunters” Friday, November 13, at 7 a.m. at the Village Inn in DeTour. Pastor Judy Arnold will join with the hunters that morning to provide blessings for a safe hunt.
