Store Plan Brought to City
      St. Ignace residents may get a new grocery store downtown if developers follow through on plans presented to the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) at its Friday, October 30, meeting. The project would put to use a vacant store building and create at least 20 year-around jobs, developers Mark Sposito of St. Ignace and Andrew Doud of Mackinac Island say.

St. Ignace Gets I-75 Guardrails
      High-tension cables strung on metal posts are being installed in Mackinac County along I-75 to save lives and reduce injuries. The cable guardrail system is engineered to stop out-of-control vehicles from crossing the highway median and crashing into oncoming traffic. The system already has saved lives in other areas of the state.

Convincing paranormal investigators strange things are happening at the Mackinac Island hotel, Charlie has been making his presence known to guests and staff, who began talking about him more than 15 years ago.

Wind Farm Plan Draws Debate
Will guidelines be enough to forestall public concerns in large farm proposed in EUP?
      A push from Milwaukee-based wind farm developer Half Moon Power for the opportunity to increase the number of wind turbines at a proposed wind farm in the Eastern Upper Peninsula is prompting Rudyard Township to consider changes to its wind turbine ordinance.

City To Buy Police Cars, Backhoe
      Residents of St. Ignace are invited to voice their comments and concerns about a proposed grocery store at 399 North State Street in downtown St. Ignace during a public hearing at the City Council meeting Monday, November 16, owing to a City Council decision to support the plan. Council also approved the purchase of two powered ambulance cots, two used police cars, and a backhoe.

Broadband Plan Gets Conditional Support
Mackinac County: Wait Until Other Counties Are on Board
      A group that wants county funding to help bring wider broadband Internet access to people in Mackinac County has found -- for the second time -- that commissioners are taking a "wait and see" approach. The group was told again at the Mackinac County Board of Commissioners meeting Thursday, October 22, to find support from other neighboring counties first, and then come back for help.

      Cleopatra was there. Cinderella and Wolverine were there, too. Witches, princesses, ninjas, soldiers, hockey players, and butterflies were all there. Ghastly ghouls from all over St. Ignace gathered at two community parties Saturday, October 31, to celebrate Halloween.

Focus Turns to ‘Big Picture’ Solutions
      Looking at the "big picture" of community health, the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians has put new educational activities in place for people in four Upper Peninsula towns. The program goal is to help prevent illness by encouraging healthy lifestyles across the community, rather than treating individual health problems.

Co-op To Buy Edison
      All electricity customers in the Eastern Upper Peninsula will now buy their power from a nonprofit cooperative, as Cloverland Electric Cooperative will buy Edison Sault Electric Company in Sault Ste. Marie from Wisconsin Energy Corporation, the cooperative announced Thursday, October 29. The transaction is contingent upon member and regulatory approval.
