Veterans Day Events Planned

Veterans Day Wednesday, November 11, is an observance to honor veterans of all wars. It marks the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, when World War I ended. The following services are planned to observe Veterans Day in local communities:

St. Ignace

A Veterans Day assembly will take place Wednesday, November 11, at 10 a.m. in the middle school gymnasium to honor area veterans. The U.S. Coast Guard will present the colors. Prentiss “Moie” Brown will be the guest speaker. The school’s children’s choir will provide patriotic songs. The public is welcome.

Veterans are invited to stay at the school for lunch following the program.

Mackinac Island

A Veterans Day service will be held at the Mackinac Island school Wednesday, November 11, at 2:30 p.m. Students will perform patriotic music.

Veterans and the public are welcome to attend.

Mackinaw City

The American Legion will host a Veterans Day potluck dinner Wednesday, November 11, at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Post at 106 South Huron Street.

Members and guests are asked to bring a dish to pass and tableware.

Les Cheneaux

There will be a program Wednesday, November 11, at 10:15 a.m. in the high school gymnasium. Music will be provided by the school band.

All area veterans and the public are invited.

Engadine

Students will recognize veterans Wednesday, November 11, at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium at Engadine Consolidated Schools.

The band will provide patriotic music, and high school and junior high students will read their Voice of Democracy essays.

Veterans and the public are invited to attend.

Pickford

American Legion Post 323 of Pickford and the Raber Am Vets will host a public assembly at the high school gymnasium Wednesday, November 11, at 10:45 a.m.

The assembly will include the presentation of the colors, a brief explanation of Veterans Day, and the announcement of essay contest winners. The high school band will provide music for the assembly.

All area veterans and the public are invited.

DeTour

The Lower St. Marys River Chapter of Habitat for Humanity will host a veterans appreciation event with music by the Northland Barbershop Chorus from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, and the DeTour Drummond Island Community Choir, followed by a lasagna supper Sunday, November 8, at 2:30 p.m. at the DeTour Union Presbyterian Church. A free will offering will be collected to help raise money to build a Habitat for Humanity house.

Rudyard

A Veterans Day assembly will take place Wednesday, November 11, at 8:30 a.m. in the Rudyard High School gymnasium.

Veterans and their families are invited to attend.
